Mrs. Boyd's 3rd grade RELA Classesโ€™ concluded their unit on Reading and Understanding Informational Text. Students completed a range of activities in order to show their learning. Students applied what they learned about informational text by selecting an informational book, reporting on the topic of their book, and presenting the information that they learned to their classmates.

Lessons and activities were designed based on the Bloom's Taxonomy model, in order to encourage higher order thinking by building students up from lower level cognitive skills.

Students had to:

- Recall and explain facts

- Formulate an opinion based on the facts.

- Create a vocabulary flyer teaching others about a word related to their topic.

- Demonstrate learning and understanding by speaking on their topic through an Oral Presentation.

It's the countdown to winter break!!!ย  5 FULL days until our much needed break!ย  We have a full line up of fun!ย

Students in 5th grade are using our 3D printers to build a Winter Wonderland of Snowmen! We LOVE snow!

Student use Tinkercad to design the snowmen, and to add the details and accessories. We print in white filament, and students will decorate them for display in January. In the upcoming months, 4th grade will also begin using Tinkercad to design Keychains.

In the spring, students in grades 4 & 5 will have a treat for the entire school!! Wait and See!

Tinkercad is a free, easy to use, app for 3D design, electronics and coding. Students can access it with their PGCPS login and credentials.

On December 13th we caught 3rd grade practicing following the rhythm! So much fun!!! ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽต

4th graders in Ms. Wrightโ€™s classes used the Engineering and Design Process to create a new and improved dental product (toothbrush, dental floss, toothpaste, mouthwash or a combination product). Criteria, constraints, and questions allowed students to generate ideas for research and design a prototype! Outstanding creativity! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›

December 12th: Students in Grade 2 used Kaplanโ€™s Depth and Complexity icons plus their knowledge of complete sentences to create an enriched elf creative writing. Incorporating D&C is a TAG Center best practice! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›

Three current GWES students and a former student showcased their impressive singing and dancing skills during their musical performance โ€˜Rock Nโ€™ Roll Revival 2023 last Saturday! Hurrah to Emmett P (5- Kiso) Matilda P (3-Puzniak), Thea M (2- Schumacher), and Eddie H who is now in Greenbelt MS! All current GWES students are in Drama Club with Ms. Hancock and Mrs. Piekarski. Bumped into Vivienne C (3-Piekarski)! Such a fun night watching a riveting musical performance! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›

Students of fourth grade classes used Lego BrickQ motion kits to describe and explain how force and mass can change an object's motion. They studied a gymnast in action and how motion affects the gymnast in the movement of their skills. Students designed a car to use the movement that replicates a gymnast swinging from the high bar for motion.

Drama Club members who recited their monologue demonstrated creativity and imagination acting out their piece. It was impressive to see how peers have judged their peer performance with their collaborative discussion determining who the winners were! Canโ€™t wait to see the rest of the members to get on mini- stage for their monologue performance next Tuesday afternoon.

There was strong evidence that Debate Club members displayed improved teamwork and enhanced interpersonal relationship among team members. Todayโ€™s topics were on:ย

1) Should hunting be banned as a sport?

2) Should students be paid for going to school? Impressive sharing of their objective points! Till next Thursday session again! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›

11/30 - It was so impressive to watch and listen how the Debate Club members articulated their thoughts clearly and argued persuasively their point of view in a confident and calm tone on these two topics: (1) Should cell phones and beepers be allowed in the classroom? and (2) Should schools impose a dress code? Awesome!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

"Framing" Quadrilaterals

Students in Mr. Doranโ€™s math classes used Kaplan's Depth and Complexity Icons to go beyond the surface level of the concept of quadrilaterals, or four-sided polygons. The icons were integrated into the discussion of quadrilaterals as well as how the icons can be used to frame nearly any topic. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›

It was an amazing display of immense confidence when some 2nd - 3rd grade Drama club members showcased their creative recitation of a monologue of their choice. Students had fun โ€˜judgingโ€™ their peersโ€™ performance. Some canโ€™t wait to have their turn performing before their peers next Tuesday. Such a highly motivated group of aspiring stage performers! Friday, Sept 15ish

Did you know that September 15ish is International Dot Day? It's a day to celebrate creativity, imagination, and working together.

It's based on the book, The Dot, by Peter Revnold's which is about a little girl Vashti who doubts her own ability in art and is uninspired. The teacher encourages and believes in the student even though the student doubts their own ability. The teacher encourages Vashti to just make a mark and sign it and so the story begins about a little girl who becomes inspired, more confident in herself, and helps others find their own creativity.

My spirit heart is full!!! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ”ต๐ŸŸก๐Ÿ”ต Itโ€™s #FantasticFriday and #InternationalDotDay! We are making our mark today and participating in so many fun and creative activities to show just how unique we are!ย

They understood the assignment! ๐Ÿ˜

ย #FantasticFriday #DotDay

Students in Ms. Emerson's, Mrs. Boyd's, and Mr. Doran's classes defined the terms fixed and growth mindset. They listened to the story, The Dot, and discussed Vashti's shifting mindset regarding her creative ability. Students were able to identify and understand that 1) Vashti had a motivator who encouraged her 2) Vashti believed that she could improve her ability and did so through practice. Students named their own personal motivators and acknowledged that they too act as motivators to friends and family.

Next, students analyzed the work of Wassily Kandinsky. The samples analyzed centered upon a dot that radiated with brightly colored irregular circles. They then created their own Kandinsky inspired art.ย

Our students are so creative! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’›

ย 5C and 5K were inspired by Peter H. Reynold's book, The Dot. After identifying positive words & phrases that reflect a 5th grade growth mindset, students "made their mark" by creating watercolor dots that are both beautiful & inspirational. We hope you feel encouraged today. ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ”ต๐ŸŸฃ๐ŸŸข๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŸก

5th graders in 5C and 5K are working on something pretty magical too! ๐Ÿ‘€ We canโ€™t wait to see the end result!ย
