To kick off Read Across America Week, we were WILD about reading! Check out all this animal clothing! Don’t forget to bring your favorite book to share with a buddy tomorrow! 📚📚📚 2/27/23

We love that school spirit!!! 👀💙🐯💛

On February 24th,  3rd graders in Ms. Emerson’s classes read about the life of famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. They explored his triumphs like the creation of the Cousteau Society, as well as, controversial aspects of his work such as the horrific treatment of sharks in his TV show. Students created a multi-layered art piece that shows the underwater world Jacques Cousteau shared with the world using several of his own inventions, like the Aqua Lung and the underwater camera. Over time, Cousteau noticed negative changes to the ocean, which was caused by human behaviors/activity. It was Cousteau’s hope that by sharing what he observed, people would change their behavior to better protect ocean life. ❤️🐟🐠🐡  We love this Arts Integration! 💙🐯💛

We cannot wait to kick off Read Across America Week, February 27 through March 3rd!

This meets the PGCPS Student Learner Profile: Critical Thinkers! 💙🐯💛

A critical thinker analyzes data, information, and ideas to make informed decisions that are reasonable based on evidence and facts while considering a variety of options.

5C/5K reflected on the spoken word poem by Amanda Gorman, given at the Inauguration of President Biden in 2021. Almost every line of this poem gave us something to think about. They had a rich and meaningful discussion over several days and thought about how they could "shine a light" wherever they go. Students from both classes collaborated in an art collage to represent the poet and highlight the poem.

This meets the PGCPS Student Learner Profile: Creator and Innovator

A creator and innovator is curious and seeks to give back to the world around them by building on or creating new ideas, products, or solutions. 💙🐯💛

On Friday, February 17th, students in 5C put on a mini play for a 3rd grade class called, The Miracle of Spring. 💙🐯💛 Great use of our Symposium Lab!

This is another example of how we meet the PGCPS Student Learner Profile: Communicator.

A communicator actively reads, writes, listens, and speaks clearly and with purpose in various settings and situations, thinking critically about using media and conventions appropriately for a given audience.

On Wednesday, February 15th in Mrs. Piekarski’s and Mrs. Armstrong’s Drama Club session, members were asked to read scripts, identify the elements of drama and have a quick share among themselves on these elements. Next steps: further discussion of each element of drama to compare and contrast how each skit is similar or different from each other and selecting the parts they would like to play in the skit of their choice. Skit readings were on: Afroyo for 4th grade members and The Mean Old Elephant, Stone Soup with Simple Songs, Why Bananas Belong to the Monkeys and How Chipmunk Got His Stripes for 3rd grade members.

This club meets the PGCPS Student Learner Profile: Communicators! A communicator actively reads, writes, listens, and speaks clearly and with purpose in various settings and situations, thinking critically about using media and conventions appropriately for a given audience. 💙🐯💛

#ThankATeacher

WHAT A SPECIAL TREAT TODAY!!! 2/1/23 Washington Commanders running back, Jaret Patterson visited GWES today to say “thank you" to his 2nd grade teacher Mr. Coon for the positive lasting impact in his life! We are #GWESProud of Mr. Coon, but equally proud of the successful man Jaret has become! 🏈💙🐯💛🏈 Teaching is a work of heart! ❤️

On Friday, January 27th, 4th graders learned fractions can be placed on a number line. Mixed fractions are fractions greater than one whole. Students worked in groups to place various representations of fractions on a number line. Way to go 4th grade!

💙🐯💛

In the month of January, Gr. 5 ICAL students used their knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and Pixel Digital Creator to design a graphic comic strip calendar. They utilized the days of the week, the weather forecast, and/or calm and daily activities in order to participate in this writing activity. A World Language, emphasis, including International Culture and Language, is a TAG Center program feature. 💙🐯💛

3rd graders in Mr. Doran’s math classes selected and read a piece of math literature. They were given a choice board of end products to use to show understanding of the math skills learned. Enriched instruction in Math is another great TAG Center Program feature!

💙🐯💛

On January 20th I snuck into the band room.  WHAT A TREAT!!! Hot Cross Buns! Way to go 4th grade band!!! #PracticeMakesPerfect  🎼💛🐯💙🎶

On January 20th, students in Dr. Raralio‘s class built balloon powered cars in Science for their unit on Energy. They watched the potential energy collected in the balloon convert into kinetic energy when they let go! A hands-on approach for Science instruction is a wonderful TAG Center Program feature.

💙🐯💛🎈🚗

On January 19th, 4th grade Math students found that equivalent fractions have the same value even if they look different. In an area model, this means that different fractions are equivalent if they cover the same portion of the whole. 💙🐯💛

On January 19th, students in Mrs. Wright’s 4th grade classes conducted a mini STEM FAIR experiment testing which shaped structure can withstand the most shocks of an earthquake..pyramid or cubed.

I love the use of Jello… Really cool! A laboratory approach for Science instruction, including STEM fair is a wonderful TAG Center Program feature.

👨🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬

On January 18th, some of our third grade Drama Club members volunteered to act out scripted monologue to demonstrate their confidence, use of voice, and tone performing before their peers. Their peers acted as judges and used a rating scale to evaluate their performance! Memorization was not part of judging of the performance. This is another example of how our students meet the PGCPS student learner profile. Our students become good communicators, creators, and innovators. 💙🐯💛

On January 18th, 4th grade students used base reasoning and explanations in Ms. Mackowiak’s class on a given pictorial representation and explained how that pictorial model represented a mathematical concept, such as plotting fraction equivalence on an open number line. 💙🐯💛

On Wednesday, January 18th, Step leaders taught our new members a routine. We can’t wait to see what they plan for our next event. #GWESProud 💙🐯💛

Thursday, January 12th: In Art class, 3rd graders are learning about artist, Wayne Thiebaud and creating Pop Art Cakes. Thiebaud cleverly uses a thick application of paint to mimic the look and texture of frosting, highlighting the idea of ‘object transference’ where the paint literally assumes the appearance of the element it is depicting. His work from the 60s focused on mass culture was characterised by heavy, colourful pigment and solid outlines placed upon stark backgrounds. The balanced and symmetric arrangement of the cakes suggests a counter display at a patisserie and invites the viewer to visually consume the sweet confections. Looking forward to seeing the finished products! 😍🎂🍰

On 1/11/23, Awards were given to the 4th grade SGA class leaders as recognition for the collection of socks for the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington DC’s Homeless and Housing Services.
