On June 30th our PTA hosted a New Family Meet and Greet and last PTA fundraiser for the 21/22 SY. We had an awesome time hanging out with Chuck E. Cheese! It had only been one week after school had ended, but the excitement is seeing our Tigers together again was so priceless. 6/2/22 Third graders in Mr. Doran’s math class answered the question, “What is my area?” They estimated the area of non-standard shapes by measuring an outline of a human body. Absolutely adorable and so fun hanging out in the 3rd grade hallway!💙🐯💛

Also on Wednesday 6/1, 4th grade students worked collaboratively to create posters to demonstrate how humans impact the Earth. Students focused on air pollution and acid rain. Bravo! 😍 💙🐯💛

May 31st: Geometry town is under construction with strict planning and zoning! 4th grade is using what they have learned about right angles, obtuse angles, parallel streets, intersecting avenues…etc. We can’t wait to see the finished products! 💙🐯💛

On Friday, May 27th, Team Piekarski and Team Puzniak discussed how different birds have a variety of types of feet while learning about Animal Adaptations. They learned that these feet have different types of sizes, shapes and purposes. They worked collaboratively in small groups to match the correct picture, description and label.💛🐯💙

On Friday, May 27th, third graders in Mrs. Puzniak's class did an Orange Experiment on estimating and measuring mass of an orange in small group. They used counters to estimate how many counters they needed to balance the scale. Then they shared and interpreted data of their findings.💙🐯💛

After a unit learning about Elements of Poetry, 5th grade students created "Concrete Poems.”

On May 20th, third graders went on a rainforest expedition! They gathered supplies on a budget and came up with an idea for an app to house all of their research. They used that research to develop an educational game for others. 💙🐯💛

5/19/22: Fourth grade students were investigative reporters explaining why Glenarden Woods won the LEED school Gold award. Excellent reporting! 💛🐯💙

LEED certified buildings save money, improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions and create healthier places for people. They are a critical part of addressing climate change and meeting ESG goals, enhancing resilience, and supporting more equitable communities. To achieve LEED certification, a project earns points by adhering to prerequisites and credits that address carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health and indoor environmental quality. Projects go through a verification and review process by GBCI and are awarded points that correspond to a level of LEED certification: Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59 points), Gold (60-79 points) and Platinum (80+ points).

5/19/22- 4th grade has some BEAUTIFUL “Five Themes of Geography” projects hanging outside the classroom. Collaborative research was conducted in small groups to self- select the geographical location of their choice. Locations included: Hawaii, Sandy Point, Bora-Bora, Georgia, Washington DC, Orlando, Florida and more! 🌎💛🐯💙🌎

On 5/18/22, Grade 2 ICAL students are studying French culture and language. Students were writing letters to Jacques, a fictitious French pen pal. They serenaded me with the French nursery rhyme, Frere Jacques. 💛🐯💙

May 17th: Third grade students enjoyed the first activity on their “ABC Countdown” for the last 26 days of the school year. Today's theme day starts with the letter A- “Airplane day!” Students enjoyed making paper airplanes and flying them before they started MCAP testing this morning.💛🐯💙 Tomorrow is B- "Bee Successful Day!" 🐝

5/17/22: 4th and 5th graders have the gift of choice in the 4th quarter in Ms. Emerson’s technology classes. Students can choose from 3-D printing, building robotics and coding, making music, green screen video production, and so much more! Best of all, they get to collaborate with peers while doing something they love! 💙🐯💛

On May 16th, Third graders observed earthworms and then used that knowledge to make connections with the earthworm informational passage they read in Science class. So immersive and what a treat!

Junk Car Derby Finals!

The Junk Car Derby school finals were Friday, May 13th! Fun was had by all!!! 💙🐯💛 Congrats to 3rd grader, Tanvi for winning first place! 2nd goes to Helena in 4th, and 3rd goes to Jed in 4th. All finalists were given awards.

On May 12th, 3rd graders in Mrs. Puzniak’s class reviewed vocabulary from the Junior Great Books story, The Banza using Go Noodle’s Word Jam. Kinesthetic learning! ❤️

On Wednesday, May 11th fifth graders in 5C and 5K finished their novel study "Rules" by Cynthia Lord. It led them to appreciate the challenges one of the characters has as he was born mute. Students created communication boards and reflected on just how much we take our words for granted. Students could only communicate using words on the boards. Good reflections were made once they had the opportunity to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. 💛 🐯 💙 Students learned a lot about inclusion.

May 10th, 2022 Technology Coordinator, Ms. Emerson started her unit on Coding and Robotics. Third graders were SUPER excited as they programmed and tested their "Milo the Science Rover" correctly. Students worked collaboratively and competitively during the "Challenge Task" where they needed precise programming to stop their Rover at a certain distance without going over. 💙🐯💛

May 9, 2022: Second graders in Mr. Coon's classes completed a Weathering and Erosion lab.They really enjoyed seeing the effect water had on the “rock”. 💛🐯💙


On 5/6/22, 5th graders in 5K and 5C used the last hour after testing each day this week to participate in Genius Hour activities! Students were able to self select an activity of choice. Some made paper roller coasters, some did origami, some crocheted, and some painted. Everyone was thoroughly engaged. 💙🐯💛

On Thursday, May 5th, Fourth graders in Mrs. Wright's Science classes participated in a seed growing lab. They will be monitoring the effects of acid rain vs. tap water. 🌱🌧💧

On 5/4/22, 2nd graders applied what they learned about poetry in order to express emotions and ideas in the composition of original poems. Students wrote free verse poems to include figurative language. Students also wrote Haiku poems. 🌸❤️🌸

4/26/22 Mrs. Wright’s Health classes were held in the Symposium lab yesterday. Students created awareness plays to share information they learned from their Respiratory Unit and lesson on, “Saying NO to Smoking”. Their performances were both entertaining and educational! 💙🐯💛

4/26/22: Students in 5C and 5K read several nonfiction texts and viewed multimedia information relating to local and international natural disasters. After much consideration, they constructed an argument stating if they would stay to help rebuild or leave and start fresh in a new location after facing the devastation of a natural disaster. What would you do?

After Mrs. Piekarski’s class tried their junk cars raced down the ramp, students analyzed and discussed what made some cars go faster than others. They even suggested to themselves and to others how to improve their junk cars for in-class competition on 4/27 and winners of each class for grade level competition on 4/28.

3rd graders in Mrs. Piekarski’s and Mrs. Puzniak’s classes are on Unit 8: “Germs! They Make You Sick!” They enjoyed an animated discussion sharing their experiences about germs especially during the pandemic. In response to such experiences, they resolve to be the ‘Worst Nightmares’ by writing a letter that explain routines for healthy living that makes it harder for the germs to spread. 🤕😷🤢

Thursday, April 21st: In honor of poetry month, 4th graders in Mrs. Armstrong's classes constructed a "Poet-Tree" where they researched and hung the various types of poems. Students are currently creating their own original poems in the style of their choice. Do you have a favorite poem? 💙🐯💛

Second graders in Mrs. Peterson’s Math class launched their unit on Fractions using Geoboards to create shapes and partition them into equal parts. Looks like hands-on fun! 💙🐯💛

Mrs. Crenshaw’s 2nd graders read the wonderful story of The Velveteen Rabbit. Students had deep discussions about the love a child has for a toy and the power of that love. Students were tasked with writing an opinion paper about a real live rabbit and a toy rabbit. Which would you prefer?

On April 20th, 2nd grade students created Spring chalk prints by scraping chalk dust into a water basin. They placed the white paper on the surface of the water to make these beautiful prints. Our students create the most beautiful art work! We are so proud of them!

When Mrs. Jeffries saw two little feet sticking out, she knew a little beetle was ready to emerge!

Thursday, April 7th: Mrs. Piekarski's and Mrs. Puzinak's 3rd grade classes used Venn Diagrams to discuss the similarities and differences between area and perimeter. The students worked on mini- projects finding their "perimeter self" and area of their favorite places. 💛🐯💙

Students in grades 4-5 have been exploring the tools and resources available in Tinkercad. They shared what they learned with their group/classmates. Their first 3D design challenge was to create a keychain that Glenarden Woods could potentially sell in a fundraiser. New Multiplication Masters!

March 14, 2022

On Monday, March 7th, 3rd graders in Mrs. Jeffries’ classes kicked off their Life Science Unit by choosing a seed to plant in order to observe the life cycle as they germinate and grow. 🌱🌿 💙🐯💛

On March 4th, Mrs. Puzniak's and Mrs. Piekarski's 3rd graders matched different representations of ✖️and ➗in a formative re-engagement lesson via collaborative work with partners or in trios. Students were engaged in rich discussions on reasoning about the matches they were making.

February 28th- March 4th is Read Across America Week! We have a theme week planned to show everyone how much we love Reading! We had so much fun each and every day!

Every day students had an opportunity to guess a mystery book for a chance to win some "book" worms!

Friday, March 4th: "Character/Artifact Day"- Students dressed as their favorite Storybook character or brought in a small artifact from their favorite story. We had so much fun!

Thursday, March 3rd was Hat's Off to Reading! Look at all this school SPIRIT!!! 🎉

On Wednesday, 3/2, we were "Wild about Reading!" Students dressed in animal print or clothes with animals. We had a great day!

February 16, 2022 was the 100th Day of School! 2nd Grade celebrated by dressing like they were 100 years old! Absolutely Adorable!

We received a very special Valentine's Day Sweetheart surprise from our PTO! The students made sure our teachers know they love them bear-y much! The staff shared a card with our GWES Families and friends... Everyone had an amazing day!

February is African American History Month!

Ms Gilroy works with students to display biographical information of famous African and Black Americans to recognize their central role in US History. “They Did… So We Could."


Second grade students completed a project titled, “I am…” (An African American History Project.) Students found a biography or autobiography about a famous person in African-American history. They researched facts and prepared a speech that their person would have read if they had to present themselves to their class. Students dressed the part by coming to school in costumes with props. 👀 Check out a few of Mrs. Boyd’s RELA students.❤️❤️❤️

1/24/22- Fourth grade launched their unit, “Who Can be a Civil Engineer?” by constructing their own buildings out of candy! That’s the engineering, technology, and design that really captures the imagination! 👀 Awesome work 4th graders!!! 💙 🐯 💛

1/19/22 -Students in Mrs. Piekarski's 3rd grade class are seen here checking on weekly water quality of the aquarium. 1/18/22 - 4th Grade students in Mrs. Wright's class enjoyed learning the anatomy of the human body. Students were able to locate and name the organs of the digestive system.

Wednesday, December 22nd: "Long Winter Nights!" It was Pajama Day! We had a lot of fun and were very very comfy! Also, the Leadership team and the PTO provided a holiday luncheon for the GWES Staff. Check it all out!

Tuesday, December 21st: "White Out Day!" Today we celebrated the Winter Solstice by wearing all white! I want to thank our AMAZING GWES Parents for sending me pictures since you are all at home and learning virtual. Please know the staff MISSES YOU ALL!

To celebrate the White Out Day, both Mrs. Puzniak’s and Mrs. Piekarski’s classes made fake snow using baking soda and hair conditioner/lotion/shaving cream. They built and dressed up their snowmen! What an amazingly fun activity!

On December 14th, 5th Grade participated in a Virtual Camp Schmidt experience! Students learned about human impact on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Welcome to Polygon City! Mrs. Piekarski’s 3rd grade Math class worked collaboratively to create a mural depicting what was learned throughout Unit 3.4: 2-D Figures!

Mrs. Mackowiak’s class listened to the story, Snowflake Bentley. They learned of his passion for snow and his desire to photograph snowflakes. He discovered the three and six sided snowflakes were all unique. No two snowflakes are the same. Students then learned to fold and be daring with their cutting of snowflakes and recognizing that they, too, are as unique as their snowflake. 💙🐯💛 12/13/21

On Friday, December 10th Gr 4. students in Ms. Wright’s classes conducted Erosion Labs. They were so happy to get their hands in the soil to build dams! Fun was had by all!

Ms. Jeffries’ 3rd graders used salt dough to create their choice of one of the 5 US regions. They are focusing on landforms and water ways in Social Studies. Formation today and painting on Friday!!

12/10/21

So many ADORABLE gingerbread houses hanging outside second grade Reading classes. Ms. Crenshaw’s and Ms. Boyd’s students completed, “Holidays Around the World” research projects. Good work!

12/13/21

Gr. 2 Math students made “Monster Math”. First, they selected the appropriate measuring tool. Next, they measured each body part of their monster to the nearest centimeter. Then, they recorded the data in a chart. After that, they graphed the data using a bar graph. Finally, they used the bar graph to compare the length of each body part. 👏🤩 #HardWork #Creative #MathIsFun

On December 8th, 2021, third graders in Ms. Piekarski's Science classes began their STEM investigation: "Does the height of the rollercoaster affect the speed at which the marble comes down?" Both in-person and virtual students participated by creating their paper tracks! They cannot wait to test out their tracks with marbles! We can't wait either!!!

Student of the Month Celebration

On November 29th Ms. Romero had the first of many Student of the Month celebrations! We honored those selected by their homeroom teachers that exhibited exceptional behavior and work habits from the first quarter.

Thankful Tuesday, November 23rd

The Leadership Team provided pies, cookies, and hot apple cider for the staff as a token of gratitude for how hard they work for the GWES students and families! We appreciate them more than you know!

Monday, November 15: Kick-Off & “Thank a Teacher” Day

Each student will be given a card to write a note of gratitude to a teacher. All cards can be dropped off in the bin outside Ms. Romero’s office. Cards will be posted on the receiver’s door later in the week.

Tuesday, November 16: Educator Day

Students will be invited to dress-up as their favorite teacher or principal.

Wednesday, November 17: Support Professionals’ Day

“Hugs and Kisses” for the bus drivers, custodial staff, and cafeteria workers.

Thursday, November 18: Substitute Educators’ Day

“Thank You” Posters to share appreciation and gratitude for their work. Students will be invited to sign and leave a message on the posters during their lunch period the previous day so that we can present these to the substitute teachers.


Friday, November 19: School is Cool & College Day

Ice pops will be given out to all staff members and students; College Day- all staff members are invited to wear college sweatshirts and tee shirts.

Thursday, October 28th: 4th Graders are helping us become Green School Certified by collecting recyclables around our building. They are so environmentally conscious.

October 25th - October 29th is Red Ribbon Week!

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people each year. This event is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs.

Monday, October 25th : We are RED-dy to make a difference! Students wore red to kick off Red Ribbon Week and awareness!

On Wednesday, October 27th, we teamed up against drugs! Students wore sports jerseys to school to show their pride!

Thursday, October 28th : We said, "PEACE-OUT" to drugs! Students wore tie-dye and neon clothing.

Friday, October 29th: We are GWESProud to be DRUG-FREE! We showed our school spirit by wearing our blue and yellow from head to toe!

On Friday, October 8th 2nd graders in Mr. Coon's Science class created a diagram with captions using research that identified plant parts and functions. This information will be used to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

Grade 5 Topic: Structures of Animals

Students invented a new animal, incorporating at least one structure each of a bird, a fish and a mammal. During a gallery walk, students placed a sticky note on the animal they had the most questions/wonderings about.
