COUNTY MANDATED GRADING POLICY
Student grades are weighted, meaning each grade category has a different value. Prince George's County Public Schools students are evaluated based on the following criteria:
ASSESSMENTS are intended to measure the successful acquisition of learning and/or mastery of a set of standards. They are aligned to a previously taught skill or concept and used for review, practice, enrichment, or completion of work unless in the instance of diagnostics. Assessments are intended to be completed with or without teacher observation. They are intended to allow students to demonstrate mastery in various modalities and formats and can be differentiated so that all students can experience success and work independently.
Category Weight: 40% of a student's quarterly grade
CLASSWORK is intended to be completed with the teacher available to observe, answer questions, and/or interact with students while completing work, or separately by the student during an independent module/break. Classwork is intended to involve interaction among students with their peers. ALigned to a previously taught skill or concept and/or used for review, practice, enrichment, completion of work or preparation for a future lesson, these assignments are Intended for the majority of the assignment to be completed during class time.
Category Weight: 35% of a student's quarterly grade
INDEPENDENT ASSIGNMENTS are intended to be completed separately from the teacher (i.e. opportunities for independent practice) and are aligned to a previously taught skill or concept and used for review, practice, enrichment, or completion of work. Students have the chance to apply what they learn in the classroom. Independent assignments usually reinforce previously taught skills and may prepare students for future lesson.

Students receive numeric grades for progress reports and report cards. In order for a student to successfully complete a class, they must earn a minimum amount of points:
In a year-long class such as English, a student must earn at least 240 points over the course of the school year. This averages out to at least 60 points per quarter.
In a semester-long class, such as Personal Fitness, a student must earn at least 120 points over the course of the semester. This averages out to at least 60 points per quarter.
SchoolMax is the grade management platform used by the district. All parents and students should have access to SchoolMax. As a parent/guardian, you are encouraged to check SchoolMax biweekly to address any concerns you may have about your child's academic progress. If you are unable to access SchoolMax, please contact Ms. Brooks, our Parent Engagement Liaison.
Teachers are expected to submit at least two grades per week so that students and their parents/guardians can have an accurate idea of their academic standing. Progress reports are made available in SchoolMax; however, report cards, which can also be seen in SchoolMax are sent home.
Parent-teacher conferences are an excellent way for parents and guardians to meet with teachers to address academic, attendance and behavioral concerns before they become insurmountable challenges. Conferences are scheduled through our professional school counselors. If you need to schedule a conference with your child's teachers, please contact their counselor:
