LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
Wednesday, June 14th
Summer break begins
Greetings Foulois Families,
Just two days remain for the 2022-2023 school year. Thank you to all parents and guardians that helped make Field Day a success. Special Foulois Falcon shout-out to our PTO for organizing and running a wonderful event for our students.
Thank you to all the families attending the Kindergarten, 5th-grade, and 8th-grade moving-on ceremonies to honor our scholars. The scholars appreciated all of the family representation.
Just a friendly reminder, the last day for students to bring their bookbags, Chromebooks, and use their lockers was Friday, June 9th. Students will not need those items and teachers will provide students with all the materials they will need for instruction these next two days.
If you have any questions about Chromebook collection, please contact Mr. Hunter (sherman.hunter@pgcps.org) with any questions or concerns.
Please stay safe through the summer break and we will see you August 28th on the first day of school for the 2023-2024 school year.
Greetings Middle School families! And here we are in the last two half-days of the year. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve you this year! We will bid each other “So long” and not goodbye because we will never leave each other as we will carry one another in our hearts always! I bid you a wonderful summer If you/your student did not clean out their locker this past Friday, they must do so Monday. All items left in lockers after Monday will be discarded. Additionally, no backpacks/tote bags/book bags/gym bags are to be brought to school. Students only need a pen/pencil.full of joy, rest, and peace! And beyond, I remind you to make great choices daily; walk in your greatness; and shine, baby, shine! If there is ever anything that I can do to support you or help you, please reach out to me immediately!

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
Greetings Foulois Families,
We hope everyone is having an amazing weekend. This is the last full week of school before summer vacation.
Thank you to all the parents who completed the 3-step volunteer process and signed up to support Field Day. Please see to it that students are dressed comfortably and wearing appropriate footwear for a full day of outdoor play. We are requesting each student bring two frozen bottle of water so that they have cool water to drink all day long. Students eligible to participate without administrative timeouts and/or suspensions during the 4th quarter will be participating in the activities.
Concessions are being sold at Field Day. Please see the flyer below for prices.
We're having a book giveaway with thousands of books. We have thousands at every reading level. If you're planning to attend in-person, please stop by with a shopping bag or box to shop for books to supplement your home library.
Foulois is requiring all students to store their Chromebook devices at the school for the summer. In this way parents can reduce damage to the Chromebooks over the summer and be reissued the same device in August prior to the start of school. If students need their device for summer school they don't have to turn it in.
We wish you an amazing week.

Greetings Middle School families! Thank you for your support in helping us to make it successfully through the administration of the Math MCAP! Now we only have the 8th Grade Social Studies MCAP in the coming weeks. And we still need parent chaperones for the Zoo field trip. If your child’s homeroom is full, no worries, sign up under another homeroom.
Parents, please send your child to school with body wipes, deodorant, and water to keep in their lockers. As the temperatures rise and bodies are changing, there’s a bit of musk in the air. Please help our students stay hydrated, hygienic, and smelling good while they are at school.
7th grade students who are academically eligible (average 3.0 GPA or higher for quarters 1, 2, & 3) will receive a hard copy of the candidacy letter during homeroom on Monday May 1, 2023. Any questions can be directed to Deandrea.Scott@pgcps.org and Elizabeth.Schmitt@pgcps.org
We invite you to volunteer or shadow your student and get to know our middle school community and an insider view of your child’s middle school experience. Be sure to give Mrs. Broussard a heads-up if you plan to come so we can confirm we are not testing or anything else that would negate a visit. During the observations, we ask that parents follow the PGCPS Code of Conduct for Families, Volunteers and Visitors and BDF protocols found here:

From international climate change activism to engagement with hyperlocal issues, youth have tapped into the networking power of social media and other online spaces to build communities, inform themselves, and engage in social and cultural change. How is digital media providing unique ways for youth to advocate for more positive outcomes for themselves and their peers? How does the intersection of race, gender, class, and age affect what online leadership and engagement looks like for different youth subpopulations? What can caregivers, educators, and communities do to embrace and safely encourage children’s desire to get involved in social movements for positive change online?
Join us on Thursday April 27 at 12pm ET for our next #AskTheExperts webinar “Engaged for Change: Youth, Digital Spaces, and Social Movements.” An all-star panel featuring a leading youth digital advocate and experts in adolescent development, education, and social welfare will examine the development of civic engagement in young people, provide examples of online youth leadership and community, review challenges and risks youth may encounter, and discuss factors that enhance positive use of digital spaces.

Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful spring break. It's testing season so to pump students up for MCAP, we're having MCAP Spirit Week. Please see the flyer below for more information. Students still have to follow the PGCPS Dress Code but we are all excited to see everyone's creativity for Spirit Week.
In preparation for MCAP we invite parents to our annual Data Night. This year it's an in-person 3-group rotation. Parents will hear from the leadership team about their child's Reading data, their child's Math data, and finally test-taking strategies. The in-person meetings are Wednesday, April 12th for parents of students in grades 3-5 and Thursday, April 13th for middle school parents, at 5:45 p.m.
Let us know if you have any questions. The Admin Team wishes everyone a wonderful week.
The Admin Team is hosting behavior incentive field trips based on 3rd-quarter behavior. The trips are April 26th for students in grades K-2 and May 10th for students in grades 3-5 and May 31st for students in grades 6-8. You will be notified when permission slips (with additional information) will be sent home some time after the break. Only students who have no behavioral issues resulting in emails/calls home, temporary removal from class at admin level, or in-school/out-of-school suspensions are invited to participate in the field trips.
The Administration Team is asking all available parents and guardians to complete the new volunteer process to chapersone these field trips.

The Board of Education approved the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year. As the calendar awaits final approval by the Maryland State Department of Education, here are key dates to know.

Greetings Middle School Families! Can you believe this is the last week of Quarter 3? And we are five days away from a well-deserved Spring Break! Hallelujah!
Spring is springing! Parents, in this season of renewal and rebirth, please take time during Spring Break to rest and reconnect because we will need your energy! Why? Typically spring is the time that gives rise to spring fever and a rise in disruptive behaviors as children are distracted by the warm weather and looming summer break. Please review the PGCPS Student Code of Conduct and your expectations for their conduct and academic excellence. Frequently remind them that they are to strive each day to conduct themselves in such a way that every community member feels safe, seen and supported to be successful. I welcome you to pop in or schedule a one hour shadow of your student. Just email/call Ms. Broussard to let me know you’re coming.
And in the next couple of weeks, students’ stamina and focus will be put to the test literally and figuratively as they demonstrate their knowledge on the Maryland Comprehensive Assessments (MCAP) and conduct spring performances. Now is the time to revisit study routines, organizational routines, bedtime routines, behavior and academic expectations; and monitor digital devices and social media closely. Each day encourage your child to practice their test-taking skills and knowledge using this link => MCAP Practice Tests.
Click this link Are You Smarter Than A Middle Schooler? Check out some of the rigorous tasks your child faces each day to give you insight on their needs and how you can support them at home. Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
Thank you to the 5th and 8th-grade parents and guardians who worked hard to get their students to school on time for the state testing in Science also known as MISA testing. We appreciate all your efforts.
Thank you to all the parents and guardians who passed the message to their own parents about Grandparents Day. We had over 200 grandparents RSVP on the Google Form and an additional 100 grandparents came out to support their grandchildren. Our grandparents had the opportunity to see pieces of the performing and creative arts program. They seemed to enjoy the show and were very proud of our students. It was our pleasure meeting and seeing our students' families.
There are only two weeks until the end of the 3rd quarter, so please use this time to review Schoolmax and follow-up with your child to ensure all assignments have been submitted. We want to see more students receive award recognition for their hard work.
A friendly reminder, all food service deliveries to students are strictly prohibited. Office staff and teachers cannot accept, deliver, or manage the student lunch orders. As always, students can bring a lunch or buy a lunch from the cafeteria. Please view the monthly menu to preview the selections. Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
We are springing into a new week. And although we gained an hour of sunlight, we have lost an hour of rest. This week is a full week of instruction. Ensure that your child arrives at school no later than 9:15am, as we don’t want any of our scholars to miss a moment of teaching. Our spring state testing begins for our 5th and 8th grade students with the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA). Students that miss the testing sessions or arrive too late, will have to attend a make-up session. For questions about testing, please email Ms. Schmitt (elizabeth.schmitt@pgcps.org).
There are only three weeks until the end of the 3rd quarter, so please use this time to review Schoolmax and follow-up with your child to ensure all assignments have been submitted. Greetings Middle School Families! We have concluded another good week and look forward to this week! We have 14 days left in third quarter and 15 days before Spring Break - not that anyone’s counting . Support your child to grind and push until the END!
As I sat in various parent/teacher conferences I realized that all of the adults in our students’ lives are working hard and I’m most grateful for that. Teachers show up each day ready to support students’ diverse needs, implement rigorous instruction and parents are checking students’ learning platforms and SchoolMAX; partnering with teachers; and making sure their child is prepared to succeed. But we need for our students to match the adults’ energy and efforts! As I explained to many a student, the adults in your life should NEVER be outworking you!
Parents, continue to have your middle schooler log into SchoolMAX, Google Classroom/Canvas and explain his/her/their grades and progress to you each week. Ask them about upcoming assignments, projects, and assessments. Greetings Middle School Families!
This past week you could find me walking around the building singing, “Can’t nobody tell me nothin’!” because I am so proud of my middle school loves! Middle school mentors continue to support their mentees and the impact of their leadership is showing in the increased academic achievement and increased positive behaviors of our elementary students. Also, this week our media arts, visual arts, theatre, and dance majors led and supported our elementary students in the Intermediate Black History Production. Our middle schoolers were the directors, crew, videographers, featured artists, etc.! Additionally,
67% of middle school students earned Q2 Honor Roll
17 (1 more than B1) students scored better than 80% on their Reading and Math Benchmark 2 assessments
40% of 6th graders met Proficiency expectations on Reading Benchmark 2 | 22% met Proficiency on Math Benchmarks
24% of 7th graders met Proficiency expectations on Reading Benchmark 2 | 2% met Proficiency on Math Benchmarks
26% of 8th graders met Proficiency expectations on Reading Benchmark 2 | 4% met Proficiency on Math Benchmarks | 5% met Proficiency on Social Studies Benchmark 2 | 1% met Proficiency on Science Benchmark.
We still have work to do, but we celebrate what we have accomplished thus far!

If you'd like to set up a conference with your child(ren)'s teachers on Tuesday, please contact the guidance counselors for an appointment.
Mrs. Reynolds (6-8) gale.reynolds@pgcps.org

Greetings Middle School Students and Families!
What an activity packed week last week! We kicked off Benchmark testing; sixth grade community meeting; and the first (of many to come) quarterly Creative Arts Spirit Day. Grab your orange because our Theatre majors went home with the spirit stick in a hard fought battle of the majors! Their words were thoughtful and caring for such sensitive topics.

STEM Fair Projects are DUE!!! Sixth grade students should turn in their full project no later than January 30. And seventh and eighth grade students should turn in their full project no later than Monday, January 23. All projects must be done on a Science Fair display board trifold and not in Google Slides.
Greetings Middle School! Today’s Action for Happiness encourages us to plan something fun and invite others to join you! And when you are sending out invitations, please remember your favorite Middle School Assistant principal . Our students are out here doing some great things- Seventh and eighth graders are mentoring elementary students; sixth graders are helping elementary students improve their reading skills by reading to them; one of our eighth graders was recently nominated to the Junior National Young Leaders Conference; and one of our seventh graders won a dance scholarship at a national touring dance convention. I'd love to shout out all of our students' accomplishments; be sure to email me and let me know.
Also, our students are steadily growing and are very active during the day! This has meant an increased thirst for some of them and an increased demand on our bottled water supply. Please send children to school with a refillable water bottle. This way, they always have water handy and don't have to interrupt their instruction or work time worried about water.
This week, we continue the countywide assessments that measure students’ mastery of grade level standards for each content area and students’ reading comprehension level. The students' results will be used to determine next steps in instruction; eligibility for extended learning opportunities and courses (i.e. Honors, Advanced, etc.). Students should get at least eight hours of rest and a brain nurturing breakfast the morning of the tests.
Also, Quarter 2 closes this Tuesday, January 24. Teachers will begin inputting final grades January 23. Teachers have already sent Notices of Concern for any students whose grade falls below 70 or have unresolved behavior concerns or more than 3 absences in the quarter. Please check SchoolMax, look for these notices in your email and respond accordingly.

Greetings Middle School! Today’s Action for Happiness encourages us to get outside and notice five things that are beautiful. Please take in all the beauty that's in your world. And last week was a flurry of deadlines as students worked to submit their STEM projects to Ms. Hankerson and Ms. Dunlap. I am excited to see the results of students' experiments and hear all that they learned and applied as they worked on their project. Stay tuned for students' public presentations!
Tomorrow, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy with acts to uplift our community. Remember all middle school students are required to earn and document at least eight (8) hours of community service/service learning before being promoted to high school. Monday, January 16 is a great day to garner some more hours by doing good around your community. Check out local opportunities such as the Volunteers of America, houses of worship, and local graduate/alumni Black Greek Letter Organizations (i.e. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, etc.). Use this form => Service Learning Verification <= to document students' hours and submit to Ms. Reynolds.
Last week, the Benchmark 2 and Reading Inventory windows opened. Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
We hope everyone is remaining healthy from the colds, flu, RSV, and COVID. We have a very busy month with multiple testing windows opening this week for mid-year assessments. When a "window" opens it means teachers are allowed to assign the assessment any time during those dates.
Both the iReady and Reading Inventory testing windows open on Monday, January 9th. The DIBELS 8 testing window opens January 18th. Families do not have to do anything extraordinary to prepare their students for these assessments. These formative assessments are like temperature checks for educators to see if and how to adjust instruction. The results are not reflected on students' grades. Some things parents can do is to make sure your student gets a good night's rest and eats a nutritious and delicious breakfast. Attending school as much as possible is of the utmost importance because it is nearly impossible to replicate the in-class experiences into make-up work. Please continue to monitor SchoolMax and follow up with teachers regarding missing work, as we are just a few weeks away from the end of the 2nd quarter.
Please read the updates carefully because there's a lot of important information families. Below you'll find information about,

Greetings Middle School! I hope the Winter Break was a time for rest, rejuvenation, and reunification. Last week, we reconnected and welcomed students back to the community with our welcome back circles, reviewed our community’s expectations and reset our intentions for the remaining 109 school days.
Today’s Action for Happiness encourages us to say positive things to the people you meet today. You never know, you just may meet a future friend! During grade level circles, we practiced greetings and discussed how a simple smile and “good morning” goes a long way to brighten someone’s day.

ATTENTION 8th Graders:
In order to be promoted to the 9th Grade in PGCPS you must complete a minimum of 8 SSL hours. All SSL hours must be completed and submitted to Ms. Reynolds, SSL Coordinator by June 1, 2023 in order to participate in the “End of the Year” activities.
What is (SSL) Student Service Learning?
Service-Learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning.
Why (SSL) Student Service Learning?
It's important that young people learn the value of giving back to the community. Together we can make a difference in our community and in the world.
When can I begin SSL Student Service Learning?
Students may begin earning hours in 6th grade.
Good News! Project 24 is ON for 2022-2023
School Year.
What is Project 24?
Middle School students now have the opportunity to earn SSL hours during the school day.
How will this be completed?
Under the direction of a teacher, counselor, or staff member. Students will complete a variety of activities designed to support and enhance the school community.
(PREPARATION):
Steps for earning SSL Hours:
Consider what activity you want to do or what specific organization you want to work with.
SSL activities can be done with nonprofit, for-profit, tax-exempt, private, and faith-based organizations/facilities.
Not Considered SSL Hours:
1) Students may not gain hours in any activity that is religious in nature.
2) ONLY Community outreach events that the church may sponsor (i.e food pantry, after school tutoring) are permissible.
(ACTION):
If the organization is PRE–APPROVED:
Contact the organization and volunteer to serve.
Participate in the SSL activity.
If the organization is NOT PRE–APPROVED:
Complete a Service Learning Site Approval Form and submit it to your SSL Coordinator for approval PRIOR TO BEGINNING service.
Upon receiving approval from the SSL Coordinator, participate in the SSL activity
(REFLECTION):
Complete an SSL Verification Form to document service performed in the summer or within each semester service is done.
Turn in the completed SSL Verification Form to Ms. Reynolds the SSL Coordinator or if you have questions please email - gale.reynolds@pgcps.org

Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
We have made it to our last week of school before winter break. The progress report window closed last week on December 14th. Please continue to monitor SchoolMax and follow up with teachers regarding missing work, as we are at the halfway point of the 2nd quarter.
Thank you for your support of our National Junior Honor Society winter events. Over 200 toys were collected for the "Toys-for-Tots" toy drive.
Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) would like you to share your thoughts on the district's culture and climate. PGCPS will use the feedback received to ensure that district offerings meet the needs of students, parents, and staff, consistent with the district’s goals. All respondents who complete the School Climate Survey can enter a drawing to win a $50 gift card. The window will close on Sunday, December 16th. Ms. Holmes, the attendance secretary requests parents and guardians still email her (linda.holmes@pgcps.org) or send a physical note when students are absent from school. Pick Up Patrol helps her keep a record of absences but she still needs a physical record of each child's absence code. When parents/guardians send an email, she's able to print them out and use that in place of a physical note so continue to email or send a note. Ms. Holmes cannot accept absent notes weeks or months after the absence(s). She has to receive the notes 3 school days after the student(s) return to school.
Have a great week and if you have any questions, feel free to let us know.
PGCPS will no longer sell paper tickets at the door for basketball games. Please tap this link for more information. Ticket sales will be limited to the number of seats available in each gymnasium.

Thank you, thank you to all the parents and guardians who heeded my call and did a random device check this week. Please continue to make this a regular routine as our students are still growing, learning and taking risks. They need our guidance, follow up and follow through.
This past week our community dealt with cyber bullying and the subsequent fallout. Please begin and continue conversations about responsible social media and internet use. I addressed students Wednesday during lunch and we began a reflective activity Friday that we will wrap up Monday. Additionally, our counseling team will meet with students in small groups to check in with students and lessons on social and interpersonal skills.
Although I was disappointed in some of the choices many of our students made this past week, I was buoyed by the many students who were brave enough to come forward and take responsibility for their actions and ramifications of their actions. This was a tough lesson this week, but our beloveds are all the better for it.
Continue to check in with your child and check on their grades in SchoolMax (Q2 progress report grades are now live in SchoolMax) and their courses’ learning platforms.

Greetings Middle School Families! Last week was a flurry of activity with the seventh graders applying their fiscal responsibility skills at Junior Achievement Finance Park and celebrating our Honor Roll recipients. And this season we have much to celebrate!
+ 77% of middle school students were on Honor Roll
+ 16 students scored better than 80% on their Reading and Math Benchmark assessments
+ 48% of 6th graders met Proficiency expectations on Reading Benchmark 1 | 10% met Proficiency on Math Benchmarks
+ 27% of 7th graders met Proficiency expectations on Reading Benchmark 1 | 1% met Proficiency on Math Benchmarks
+ 54% of 8th graders met Proficiency expectations on Reading Benchmark 1 | 15% met Proficiency on Math Benchmarks
While there is much to celebrate there is also much more work still to be done! Ask your child their individual benchmarks scores and Reading Inventory Lexile. Discuss their plan for growth. Daily, ensure students are reading a text (article, book) of their choice for 30-45 minutes and applying math concepts on IXL, Mobius Math, and Khan Academy. Access the multitude of resources on Clever.
This week teachers will input Quarter 2 progress report grades. Be sure your child is showing you their assignments, grades and progress in SchoolMax, Google Classroom/Canvas every week!

The High School Specialty Program application window will be drawing to a close on December 16th and Suitland's CVPA program would like to invite every 8th-grade student to become familiar with the audition for the arts major of their choice.
Since most adolescents are unfamiliar with auditioning as a practice, receiving training would significantly increase their skill and confidence in preparation for the actual audition in January.
Prospective students and parents come to learn about the program and see what the CVPA has to offer at the IN-PERSON Audition Workshop on December 6, 2022, from 6 - 8 PM.

These are major assessments to measure students’ progress towards standards mastery. Teachers use students’ results to determine instructional next steps and future course offerings (i.e. honors, accelerated, Algebra I, etc.). These assessments will require students to demonstrate their knowledge of concepts and skills taught Quarter 1 by reading literary and expository texts, charts, graphs, and writing (yes, even on the Mathematics assessment). Ensure students get at least 8-9 hours of rest nightly; healthy brainfood for breakfast; and read through their course’s notes, assignments, interactive journals and teacher feedback on the assignments. Discuss test anxiety, test taking strategies and stress release strategies with them too. Finally, allow them time in the evenings to relax and decompress their day.
There are great things happening at BDF! Last week, our piano majors had the opportunity to enjoy two guest pianists for an intimate piano concert. And we are excited about the start of basketball and cheer season! We will rally behind our teams this Wednesday as they face off against Kettering MS. Also, our students have committed to making improvements for the second quarter and are hard at work making learning happen! Engage with the resources below to see how you can best support them.

Regular Day of School
Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
We hope everyone enjoyed their extra hour of sleep. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Read-A-Thon fundraiser. Mrs. Torchiano's homeroom class is in the lead but there's still more time for another class to come out on top. Ms. Hankerson's homeroom class close and is in second-place. The fundraiser ends Tuesday, November 8th.
Tomorrow, Monday, November 7th is an ASYNCHRONOUS work day for students. Every PGCPS student will work from home or another alternative location. Teachers were given the options of giving students paperwork, a digital assignment on Google Classroom, or a digital assignment on Canvas. Make sure your child(ren) complete the attendance check-in for each class. The attendance check-in will be a Google Form OR an assignment students must turn-in. All student work from Monday counts as a grade. The work students complete on Monday will count as the first grades for the second-quarter. Please email each of your child(ren)'s teachers, academic and creative/performing arts, if you're unsure of the work students are to complete.
Last week we closed out the first quarter! Everyone, raise your arm and reach around to your back. Now, pat repeatedly! Because you, YES YOU, made it to the second quarter! Was it pretty? Maybe not! Was it smooth? Maybe not! Was it easy? Maybe not! And yet you are here! Breathe in that win!
I am so very proud of the maturity and intellectual insights our seventh grade students exemplified and shared as they met with and questioned author and gubernatorial candidate Wes Moore as he discussed his book Discovering Wes Moore. As part of the RELA 7 curriculum, students have read and analyzed the book. He was so impressed by our students that he promised to meet them in person soon.
The second-quarter schedule for the creative and performing arts has been posted in the School Schedules section of the Foulois Family Newsletter. Third through fifth grade parents, please take a look so you can stay informed on the arts rotation for the second-quarter.
Remember students must log in and actively participate in asynchronous learning Monday, November 7 to receive credit for attendance and to continue their learning. Also, put these dates on your calendar:
WED 11/9- 8th Grade Social Studies Benchmark
THUR 11/10- 6th, 7th, 8th Grade Math Benchmark | 8th Grade Science Benchmark
MON 11/14- 7th, 8th Grade RELA Benchmark
TUES 11/15- 6th, 7th, 8th Grade RELA Benchmark
WED 11/16- 6th Grade RELA Benchmark
The course benchmarks are major assessments to measure students’ progress towards standards mastery. Teachers use students’ results to determine instructional steps and course offerings (i.e. honors, accelerated, Algebra I, etc.). These assessments will require students to demonstrate their knowledge of concepts and skills taught Quarter 1 by reading literary and expository texts, charts, graphs, and writing (yes, even on the Mathematics assessment). Discuss test anxiety, test taking strategies and stress release strategies with them too. Finally, allow them time in the evenings to relax and decompress their day.
Science teachers have issued the STEM packets. Monday, while home attending classes asynchronously, is a great time to get started on the STEM projects. Parents/Guardians, read through the packets with your child and consider where and when they will need support. Additionally, Tuesday, take students with you as you enact your civic responsibility and choose our local and national leaders. Finally, be sure to reflect with your student what went well this first quarter and what did not go so well. Write it down. Make a plan of what you will do second quarter. Then work the plan!

And make up work cannot be submitted five (5) school days prior to the end of the quarter (October 31) to ensure teachers have time to grade all outstanding work. Late work (work submitted after the assignment’s deadline) is accepted only at teacher discretion.

We are encouraging our scholars to wear special colors this week to raise awareness on major issues.
This is a friendly reminder that PGCPS is a 1:1 (one-to-one) school district for Chromebooks. We encourage everyone to get a Chromebook cover to protect your child's device. As shared in your agreement, the 1st incident of damage is $30; subsequent damage will be the full replacement cost. Contact Mr. Hunter with questions.

Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
This is a short but impactful week. Many of you have already scheduled and held a conference with your child(ren)'s teacher(s). If you were not able to reserve a spot on the teacher's Sign Up Genius, you can email teachers to schedule a conference during teacher office hours. Teachers published the 1st quarter progress report grades last week. Please take the time to check SchoolMax to see if your child is missing any assignments that may be having a negative impact on your child's performance. Now is the time to address concerns, get clarity, and collaborate with the teachers as we are halfway through the first quarter.
Please reserve a spot on your calendar for the next PTO General Body meeting. It is a virtual meeting on Tuesday, October 25th at 6:00 p.m. Please follow the link at (PTO section link) to join the meeting.

We will take families through an exploration of the resources that are available to them to support their students during the Diagnostic and beyond. Please register to attend a virtual session. You will receive a confirmation email with details on how to join the training.

Good Evening Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the new format for our Foulois Family newsletter. The look is new but families will continue to receive the same important information, weekly on Sunday nights. We hope the new navigation features help families find the information they're looking for quickly and effortlessly.
The first full week of October is here and fall testing is still underway. Please encourage your scholar to get a full night's rest and attend school daily.
Please contact Mr. Agnew at jagnew@pgcps.org to receive the registration email for the new dismissal system, PickUp Patrol. Follow the steps in the registration process to create your Pick Up Patrol account as we transition our dismissal process to this platform. The registration link families will receive is only for 24 hours.
Tap the icon or link below for more information about the program.
Please create your accounts as soon as possible. Monday, October 3, 2002 will be the last day that the office staff will be taking emails/notes and phone calls concerning changes in your child's dismissal plan. We will officially begin using Pick Up Patrol on Tuesday, October 4, 2022.
If you do not receive an email inviting you to register for Pick Up Patrol, today, please let us know. Contact, both, Ms. Holmes (linda.holmes@pgcps.org) and Mr. Agnew (jagnew@pgcps.org) to ensure your email address is correct, current/up to date.
Teachers are excited to meet with each family individually for Parent-Teacher conferences. In an attempt to accommodate more of our BDF parent/guardian schedules, many staff members have provided evening conference times in lieu of the October 10th parent conference day. While many staff members have adjusted their evening schedules to provide more convenient conference times, all staff members were unable to make such adjustments. See the sign up chart below to schedule a conference with your child’s teachers. Please pay careful attention to the conference dates and times. Different conference dates and times are offered, depending on the teacher and or grade level. Go to the following grade level link and or teacher’s link to schedule a conference with your child’s teachers.

Middle School Announcements
Greetings MS students and families!
These first four weeks have flown by! Last week we conducted a lockdown drill with caution and care to further build our capacity to efficiently and safely respond to emergency situations. We also took vocabulary assessments and other quizzes to check our understanding and demonstrate mastery. And we shared course and teacher expectations and ways to be successful during our informative Back-to-School night. Just in case you missed it and also to have for your reference click this link => BDF MS Parent Resource Videos <= to see what we shared during Back-to-School night and during the MS Parent Orientation. We didn't earn "FREEstyle" Friday last week, but I remain hopeful for this upcoming week.
This week students will continue to take the Reading Inventory to assess their reading comprehension level. Teachers will send "Notices of Concern" for any students who have a course grade less than 70%, three or more absences, or unresolved behavior concerns. Teachers will also input students' progress report grades this week. Be sure you have your child check SchoolMAX, Canvas/Google Classroom to review their grades and progress each and every week. This way you can intervene early if needed. And also, having children share and explain their grades and assignments helps them to take ownership of their learning, progress, and builds their independence.
In about two weeks, our grade level teams will invite students to play kickball and various outdoor games and dine on food from their favorite restaurant at lunch bunch. In order to be invited, students must meet all of the following criteria-
Parent signed Student Code of Conduct Acknowledgement form submitted
70% and above in all four academic classes
Two or less missing assignments across all classes
No behavioral issues resulting in emails/calls home, temporary removal from class at admin level, or in-school/out-of-school suspensions
The Benjamin D. Foulois Girls and Boys Basketball season begins on Oct. 24, 2022 for tryouts, students must have a physical and it must be signed by a physician. The physical must be turned into Ms. Schmitt. Information about Open Gym is forthcoming.
Piano Club is now full, but Ms. Pruett is accepting applications for a waitlist. Thanks for all the interest! We will start October 12th from 4:10-5:30 p.m. See you in the piano lab!
The first meeting of the Foulois Dungeons & Dragons Club has been pushed back to October 17th. All students who have handed in permission slips should check their email for important information from Mr. Smith.
Elementz Dance Ensemble is holding open company classes every Wednesday from 4:15-5:30 p.m. Please fill out the Google Form if interested and see the flyer for more details.
Here at BDF, we prioritize student safety whether it’s in the building, online, or away from home on devices. That is why we want to make parents and guardians aware of the possible online dangers. You can tap this link to find a blog post about social media, slang, and narcotic-related emojis all parents should know. We care about your kids and want to keep them safe wherever they are. Have a wonderful week!

Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
Thank you to everyone attending the Administration/Parent nights last Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Parents and guardians asked great questions and we had great conversations with all our families. The presentations from the Testing, Technology, and Communication portion of Administrator night are below.
Would you please take a few minutes to answer our brief survey? There are only six questions on the Google form and your responses will help us improve future family events. Administration Orientation Night Parent/Guardian Survey
Up next we are holding virtual Back to School Nights over Zoom. It’s an opportunity to meet your child’s/children’s teachers and hear about routines, procedures, and the academic programs. Please set aside time from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. You can find links to the events below.
Teachers are also posting their Zoom links in Class Dojo, Canvas/Google Classroom, or both. For safety and security we are only posting the links in places with controlled access or access to parents and guardians only. We are NOT posting the links to the school website or other public places.
Please ensure that your contact information in SchoolMax is current so that you can be contacted. Please ensure you’ve signed up for the SchoolMax Family Portal to receive robo calls and emails from our mass communication system, School Messenger. If you’ve forgotten the password or have other issues with SchoolMax Family Portal, please contact our registrar, Ms. Holmes at linda.holmes@pgcps.org. From the desk of Mrs. Broussard, Middle School Administrator:
Greetings Middle School Families and Students! The awesomeness continued week two. Thank you for your support.
Middle School held the Student Code of Conduct circles for each grade level. Be sure to review the Student Code of Conduct with your child, sign and return the Acknowledgement Form to your child’s homeroom teachers. Forms were also sent home with students. For quick reference, you may access the handbook at Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook(English) OR Manual de Derechos y Responsabilidades del Estudiante OR the video Student Code of Conduct - Google Slides.webm taken from the presentation. Additionally, this week we attempted our first lunch “Freestyle Friday” of the school year. Freestyle Fridays are opportunities students earn to sit freely and enjoy their classmates showcasing their talents. It was moderately successful and we will continue to work on demonstrating consideration, courtesy, and respect while we are consuming lunch.
This Thursday, I look forward to meeting all of our parents/guardians at the Middle School Administrative Parent Orientation this Thursday, September 15 at 5:30 PM. This event is only for adult caregivers/parents/guardians of our middle school students. You will have the opportunity to get oriented with PGCPS tools that will help you to support your child's successful middle school experience.
As always, be sure to have your student review each class's gradebook in SchoolMAX and through each class's learning platform whether it be Canvas or Google Classroom to showcase all they accomplished this past week.
Take care; be well.
It is critical for all parents to provide the school with the student’s dismissal plan and email address, so that we can verify how all students are getting home. We are in preparation to transfer to an automated system, PickUp Patrol which will streamline dismissal and the documenting of absences. Until we begin PickUp Patrol, please email Ms. Gorham (roselina.gorham@pgcps.org) , Ms. Holmes, linda.holmes@pgcps.org) AND your child’s Reading & Math teachers with any changes to your child’s usual dismissal route.
Thank you so much!

Good Evening Parents & Guardians,
We had an awesome first week of school learning the procedures, expectations and student responsibilities that will ensure a successful school year. We enjoyed celebrating our kindergarten students for completing their first week of school as well as introducing our 8th graders as the “seniors” of the building during Friday’s pep rally. For our K-2 students, we sent home a special treat for all students who had a completed publicity release form on file.
Parents, be sure to have your student review each class's syllabus with you and walk you through each class's learning platform whether it be Canvas or Google Classroom. Students should be able to tell you the expectations and what they need to do to be successful this school year.
This week will be short but impactful. We will conduct Student Code of Conduct assemblies (September 6 -8) using the circle process. We will celebrate our students, set our intentions, and learn how we can operate with consideration, courtesy and respect to ensure everyone in our community is safe, seen, and supported to be successful. Once we have held the circles, students will bring you the PGCPS Student Code of Conduct Agreement. Be sure to acknowledge receipt of the agreement with your signature on the hard copy. A digital copy of the Student Code of Conduct will also be shared. Also, if you have not signed the Dress Code form and submitted it to your student's homeroom teacher, please do so immediately. And finally, be certain to complete and return the Publicity Release form as we would like to showcase our scholars!
This is also a reminder to email a note to your childs’ teacher and Ms. Holmes (linda.holmes@pgcps.org) when your child is out for an excused absence. Be sure to include your child's full name, grade level, and homeroom teacher in this communication.
Come prepared for Physical Education class
Be sure students wear their sneakers on the days they have Physical Education class, so they are able to participate fully, safely.
Middle School Tryout for Baseball & Softball this week
Middle School Students, Join the Dungeons & Dragons Club
6th, 7th, and 8th graders interested in participating in Dungeons & Dragons Club should return a signed permission slip to Mr. Smith no later than September 16th. Click this link for more information: tinyurl.com/foulois2022dnd
Save the date for our Adult Only, Parent/Guardian Orientation Night: Sept. 13th (K-2); Sept. 14th (3-5); and Sept. 15th (6-8).
Lastly, our morning drop off procedures are in place to ensure student safety and a smooth transition. The “Kiss and Go” line is meant for a quick drop off, students should be ready to quickly exit your vehicle. If an adult has to get out of their car or if a scholar needs to move at a slower pace, please find a parking space and walk or watch your baby walk to the side or front walkway. The BDF community appreciates all families who adhere to our “Kiss and Go” procedures.

While parents/guardians are not permitted in the building, we do hope you are available to join staff in welcoming/cheering our students as they enter the building, Monday morning.
As shared in our welcome back video, PGCPS will no longer offer free breakfast/lunch to all students. Parents/Guardians, please access your SchoolBucks account for any remaining funds or please add additional funds to your child’s SchoolBucks account. If you do not have access to the SchoolBucks account, lunch can be purchased with cash. Cost is shared in the Welcome Back Letter.
It is essential that the dismissal plan for all students is completed by 11:59 pm, August 28th. Please see the welcome back letter on the BDF website for the link.
To ensure consistency in communication, look forward to this newsletter on Sunday evenings. Please make sure all contact information in Schoolmax and the Family Portal are up to date so you can receive this weekly newsletter. The first day and week of school are exciting times and with the excitement, we ask that all BDF Family/Community Members pack a bit of patience, especially during arrival and dismissal.
Please view the welcome video from our proud principal, Ms. Hogue.
