Dear Foulois Families,
The mandatory, virtual 8th-grade parent meetings is Monday, April 28th.
MCAP Testing for ELA continues Tuesday, April 29th and Wednesday, April 30th. Math begins Thursday, May 1st. Please help to ensure that your scholars get a good night's rest, eat breakfast in the morning, and arrive to school on time. We are scheduled to begin testing promptly at 10:00 am!
In an effort to ensure testing is completed in a timely manner, we are asking that you assist with your scholar's success by ensuring they are in school for each scheduled day of MCAP testing. Each testing session has to be done in order and sections cannot be skipped so if they miss school, they will have to complete a makeup session before they can rejoin their class for testing.
Scholars that are present for each scheduled day of testing will be rewarded with an MCAP Attendance Event. More information on this is to come. Thank you in advance for assisting with a smooth completion of our state testing.
Third quarter report cards are released and printed this Thursday, April 30th. The grade appeal window opens Thursday, May 1st.

Dear Foulois Families,
We hope this message finds you well and enjoying the start of spring! It’s hard to believe how quickly this school year is flying by. We are grateful for your continued partnership and support as we work together to create a nurturing environment for our students.
We are thrilled to share that last week's behavior incentive field trips were a blast! All three groups had a fantastic time at Main Event, and our 5th-graders enjoyed a wonderful experience at Camp Schmidt. It was heartwarming to see our students engaged and having fun together, showcasing their positive behavior and teamwork!

Dear Foulois Families,
As we welcome the month of March, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and partnership. It is a joy to work alongside you in fostering a nurturing and enriching environment for our students.
Important Announcements
As you may know, Maryland law requires all school districts to have at least 180 school days and meet specific instructional hour requirements for elementary, middle, and high school students. Due to this year’s winter weather, we have had five school closures and four delayed openings/early dismissals. To ensure our students receive the instructional time they need, we will be making the following adjustments to the school calendar in addition to the February 14 change from a professional development day to a school day:
March 5 – Full school day (No Delayed Opening)
March 17 – Regular school day for students
June 16 – Regular school day for students
June 17 – Regular school day for students
June 18 – Full school day (No Early Dismissal)
We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we work to provide the best learning experience for our students. If additional changes are needed due to inclement weather, we will keep families updated.

End of 2nd Q
Dear BDF Families,
As we embrace this fresh start, I’d like to remind everyone of some key expectations, updates, and reminders that will help us maintain a positive, safe, and productive learning environment:
Timeliness to School: Students must arrive on time each day, prepared to learn and participate actively. Punctuality not only sets the tone for a successful day but also ensures students don’t miss valuable instructional time. Please make punctuality a priority to support your child’s success. Remember, you are late after 9:25 am.
Respectful Behaviors: Respect continues to be a cornerstone of our school culture. Students are expected to treat peers, teachers, staff, and our school environment with kindness, courtesy, and integrity. This is the same expectation re: staff to student respect. Whether in the classroom, hallways, or during activities, demonstrating respect helps create a positive and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
Dress Code Adherence: All students are required to follow the BDF dress code, which reflects self-respect and supports a focused learning environment. Please ensure your child wears the appropriate attire daily, including any creative arts requirements. If you are unsure about the dress code specifics, please review the dress code policy on the BDF website.
Picture Retakes: We're having picture retakes are Friday, January 17th but only for students who were absent on picture day, new students, or are requesting a retake. Families can need to tap the link to fill out the Google form. Link here -> Picture Retake Form Please see the flyer below for more information.
Technology and Yonder Pouches: To reduce distractions and foster greater engagement, all students must use Yonder pouches to store their personal devices during the school day. Students are required to secure their devices in the Yonder pouches upon arrival and keep them stored until dismissal.
Beverage Containers: To ensure equity and access to the water dispensers, beverage containers brought to school must not exceed 14 ounces. While we understand that many students may have received larger Stanley or Yeti containers as gifts, any container larger than 14 oz is prohibited on campus. Please help us by ensuring your child brings an appropriately sized container to school.
Technology Access at Home: While PGCPS no longer sends Chromebooks home with students, it’s important that students have access to a device for learning at home. Students in kindergarten and above will need access to technology to use digital platforms that support learning and interventions. For families of students who entered school after 2020, this expectation may be new since chromebooks were provided for students due to the pandemic, however, it remains essential. At the start of the school year, we shared this expectation to provide families time to purchase or plan for access to a device for their student. If you do not currently have a device at home, we encourage you to explore local libraries or other community resources to support your child’s success. Access to technology is now as critical as owning encyclopedias once was and directly impacts your student’s academic achievement.
Traffic and Safety Reminder: As you arrive at BDF, you’ll notice new road cameras near the school. While the exact monitoring focus is unclear, please drive carefully, observe the 15 mph speed limit, and come to a complete stop at all stop signs. Let’s work together to ensure the safety of our students, families, and staff.
Parental Partnership: Families play an essential role in their children’s success. We encourage you to stay actively involved by monitoring your child’s academic progress, communicating regularly with teachers, and reinforcing the importance of school rules and expectations at home. Your support is instrumental in helping our students thrive academically, socially, and creatively.
We deeply value your partnership and respect the diversity of opinions within our school community. While we understand that not all policies may align with personal preferences…such as the use of Yonder pouches to limit distractions…we must prioritize what is best for the collective success of our students and school environment. These policies are thoughtfully implemented to foster focus, engagement, and a culture of learning.
Your cooperation and understanding play a significant role in maintaining a supportive and effective learning environment for all. If you have questions or concerns, we encourage open communication, but please know that adherence to school policies remains essential for the benefit of the entire BDF community.
Thank you for your continued respect, support, and collaboration. Together, we can ensure that 2025 is a year of growth, achievement, and creativity for our students.
Here’s to a bright and successful new year!

Dear Foulois Families,
This marks the second full week of the second quarter, and each student is starting fresh with a new slate. As we dive deeper into the curriculum, the academics will become more challenging, especially since this quarter does not include review time from the previous grade. We encourage students to take this opportunity to reflect on their practices and work habits in order to identify areas for improvement. By doing so, they can maintain or even enhance the excellent grades they achieved during the first quarter.
Veterans Day Reminder: This Monday, we honor Veterans Day. Please note that Prince George's County Schools will be open. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all veterans for their service to our country.
Benchmark Testing: We are thrilled to share that we have completed most of our Benchmark testing, with only a few make-up sessions remaining.
The testing window for Benchmarks in Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading began Monday, October 28th. Your student will take a test on the quarter 1 standards sometime before November 15th. Students in grade K-2 will take just a Math Benchmark. Students in 3-8 will take a Reading Benchmark. Students in grades 5 & 8 take a Science Benchmark. Students in grade 8 will also take a Social Studies Benchmark. These district assessments will be administered on the county-issued Chromebooks.
Sibling Application: Applications are now online! Sibling parents must complete two (2) applications. For assistance, contact Ms. Holmes at linda.holmes@pgcps.org or (301) 817-0300.

Additionally, thank you to all the families who supplied materials for the end-of-month behavior incentives and for taking the time to attend our PTO meetings and cell policy information sessions. Your involvement makes a positive impact on our school community!

Greetings Benjamin D. Foulois Families,
Your professional school counselors have planned a Spirit Week to bring awareness to some important causes. This year's campaign theme is "Life is a Movie: Film Drug Free." Please see the flyer below for how we're recognizing being drug free.
Thursday, October 31st is Halloween. There is no school-wide event for this holiday. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher to know if and how they are choosing to recognize the day. Thursday, October 31st is also the end of the first quarter. As we move closer to the end of the first quarter, make sure to ParentVue for any missing assignments and your child's backpack for any assignments they have forgotten to turn in.
This Wednesday, parents and guardians for students in grades 5th through 8th are invited to an informational meeting on the new cell policy. Please make arrangements to join us on Zoom.
PGCPS Climate & Culture Survey: This is a friendly reminder to complete the 2024 PGCPS Climate and Culture Survey if you haven't done so already. Your feedback is crucial in helping us create a positive and supportive school environment. Students in Grades 4-12, families, and staff are encouraged to participate and share their school experiences, perceptions, and ideas. The survey is conducted in partnership with Hanover Research and is completely anonymous, ensuring your responses remain confidential.
The survey will be open until October 31. After completing the survey, you can enter a contest to win a prize from the Office of Strategic Planning. One winner will be chosen randomly. A prize will be given to the homeroom with the most family completions. Please take a few minutes to participate and have your voice heard. If you have questions about the survey, please contact the Office of Strategic Planning at strategicplanning@pgcps.org. Please take a moment to listen to messages from Superintendent House (English) and Board Member LaSalle Frazier (Spanish)

Dear BDF Families,
As we enter the final three weeks of the first quarter, let’s continue to walk in our greatness and finish strong! I want to remind everyone that school-wide information will be shared in our weekly updates, while classroom-specific details will be communicated through our classroom platforms (e.g., ClassDojo). Thank you to all our amazing families for taking the time to read these updates.
This week, we have several important updates to share.
PGCPS Systemic Parent Conference Day: Thank you to all the families who participated in the recent parent conferences. We understand that it’s challenging to meet with every family in a single day (6.5 hours), which is why some teams opted to offer alternative conference days for more flexible scheduling. Despite these additional slots, it was still impossible for teams to meet with every family. If you were unable to meet with your child’s teacher, please feel free to schedule a conference at your convenience. Please note that, due to teacher planning obligations and contractual requirements, one planning period each week is dedicated to parent/504/IEP conferences. Remember, you can always email your child's teachers with any questions or concerns.
Hello Foulois Family,
We hope this newsletter finds you well and thriving. As we transition into another busy week, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt appreciation for your continued partnership and support in nurturing our students' growth and learning.
Please note that schools will be closed for students tomorrow, Monday, for a professional development day. We appreciate your understanding as our staff engages in important training to better serve our students.

Coming up on Monday, October 7th, we are excited to offer flexible conference times to accommodate more of our BDF parent/guardian schedules. Many staff members will be providing evening conference slots in lieu of the October 7th Parent-Teacher Conference day. Please pay careful attention to the specific dates and times offered by your child’s teachers, as they vary by grade level. Conferences will be held virtually, and links will be emailed to you prior to your scheduled time.
On an exciting note, we are thrilled to announce that on Tuesday, we will be having the kick-off assembly for our Read-a-Thon fundraiser! This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage in reading while supporting our school. We can't wait to see the enthusiasm from our students as they embark on this journey!

As we move into the 3rd week of the school year, I would like to share some updates and reminders:
Arrival - Students are not allowed in the building until 9 am. Staff is not on duty until 9 am, therefore, student supervision will not begin until 9am. When students are dropped off prior to 9 am, supervision must be provided by a parent/guardian or the parent designee (i.e. van service) Please do not allow your student to exit your vehicle prior to 9 am. PGCPS Bus Drivers have been reminded that students should not exit the bus prior to 9 am.
Tardy - Students are considered late after 9:25 am. Instruction begins at 9:30 am. It is difficult for students to enter the building after 9:25 am and be prepared for instruction at 9:30 am. If you are transporting your child(ren) to school, a target time should be between 9:00 am - 9:15 am, this will allow your child(ren) to navigate their locker and enter their homeroom without the stress of “rushing”. As a parent, I recognize the arrival time of PGCPS transportation is out of your control. However, the time you bring your child(ren) to school is within your control, please get them to school on time!
Lunch - Thank you for making sure your child(ren) knows their lunch pin numbers. Please help us in reminding our students that the sharing of lunch is prohibited, primarily due to student allergies. It takes all of us to keep our babies safe!
Concerns - ParentVue activation code, change of address and some limited transportation concerns, see Ms. Holmes. Classroom academics, behaviors or digital platforms, please contact your child’s teacher, if the concerns continue, please include the grade level administrator on the email thread. Of course, if the concern continues, this is when I need you to add me (Principal Hogue) on the email thread. "Lunch payment concerns." Finally, if you have health concerns, please contact Nurse Spencer.
Celebrations/Incentives - We will have our first student celebration this week. We will celebrate our kindergartners first 3 weeks of school and introduce the 8th grade ℅ 2025 to the building.
Field Trips - Grades K-5 will be allowed to have 5 chaperones per homeroom. All chaperones must be fully vetted via the PGCPS Volunteer process before the announcement of the field trip. I strongly suggest if you are interested in being a parent chaperone for a field trip, all items are completed by October 25th. A volunteer sign-up sheet will be shared (via parent newsletter) a week prior to the distribution of the field trip permission slip, the first 5 vetted chaperones will be selected and informed prior to the distribution of the field trip permission slip. We will use the time stamped on the sign-up sheet to confirm the first 5 submissions. Only approved chaperones will be allowed to submit their chaperone payment for the identified field trip and allowed to participate as a chaperone. Chaperones will be assigned a group of students to supervise and must travel with the students to and from the field trip location. Parents may not show up to a field trip location and join our students…NO EXCEPTIONS!
College Pennant Collection Drive - We need your help to finish decorating our hallways with college pennants. While we welcome all colleges, we would love to “flood” our hallways with HBCU pennants. Please send all donations to the main office, Attention Ms. Hogue.

We hope this newsletter finds you well and filled with excitement for the upcoming school year! Your support and partnership are invaluable to us, and we are grateful for your continued involvement in our school community.
We had an awesome first week of school! Students learned the procedures, expectations, and responsibilities that will lead to a successful year. A special shout-out to our kindergarten students for completing their first week and to our 8th graders, who are proudly stepping into the role of “seniors” of the building. These moments remind us of the joy and growth that come with a new school year.
Please take some time to review each class syllabus with your student. Understanding the expectations will help them succeed this school year.
This week, we will celebrate our students, set our intentions, and learn how to operate with consideration, courtesy, and respect. This will ensure everyone in our community feels safe, seen, and supported. After our Student Code of Conduct assemblies, students will bring home the PGCPS Student Code of Conduct Agreement. Please sign and return the hard copy to acknowledge receipt.
We would like to showcase our scholars! Please complete and return the Publicity Release form.
Remember to email a note to your child's teacher and Ms. Holmes (linda.holmes@pgcps.org) when your child is out for an excused absence. Include your child's full name, grade level, and homeroom teacher. This is especially important as only Ms. Holmes and Ms. Halsey can excuse absences and tardies in our new system, Synergy.
Ensure that students wear their sneakers on Physical Education days to participate fully and safely.
