at Benjamin D. Foulois Creative and Performing Arts Academy
My name is Mrs. Tabitha Nimmons and I am the new Reading Instructional Coach at Benjamin D Foulois. I am thrilled to help support the vision and mission of BDF in a new role. I can't wait to get the school year started and to help support students and teachers in Reading and Language Arts. I hope to be a positive impact for even more students in our school.
My primary role is to keep the literacy programs in grades Kindergarten through 8th on track by supporting both teachers and students. Some of my duties include: intervention support, providing and organizing resources, professional development, in-classroom coaching, parent and community support, and curriculum and assessment support.
I've been here at BDF as a second-grade teacher since 2017. Here's a little bit about my style of teaching. In 2021 I completed the incredible Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). The course changed my understanding of how to effectively teach reading, writing, and spelling. I use the knowledge gained and apply it to the intervention planning and implementation. I inject student engagement and interest to lessons through Art and Technology Integration. I've attended training institutes from Prince George's county's Art Integration Office. I also earned a Master's degree in Instructional Technology in 2017. The strategies gained allow me to make the learning enriching, engaging, and enduring.
I've had a compulsion to read since I was a little girl. I love to read. My favorite genres are science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, narrative nonfiction, poetry, crime fiction, mystery, and literature. I will ask students and families for book recommendations. One of my personal goals is to pass on the practice of losing oneself in a story.
