Summary: A reading comprehension study gave 4 homogenous groups of students an article on baseball. The most successful group was the group with lots of baseball knowledge and high readers. The second-highest performing group were the low readers with lots of baseball knowledge. Students comprehend much more when they have the relevant vocabulary and background knowledge. This makes preparing for standardized testing impossible because there’s no telling what the topics will be. Students need to know a lot about a lot of different topics to do well on any comprehension assessment.
