Please email all book requests to Library@petroc.ac.uk
Copyright is a law that gives the owner of a work (for example, a book, movie, picture, song or website) the right to say how other people can use it. Copyright laws make it easier for authors to make money by selling their works.
With copyright, a work can only be copied if the owner gives permission. As a result, it is important to be aware of how you can use copyrighted works in your study.
On this page there is information on how you can make copies of works at Petroc. You can also find information about using works under a Creative Commons licence and a flow chart to explain how you can use different works depending on their copyright status.
There are also links to important documents from the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) for more detailed information.
The BBC Copyright Aware page has been put together to make using copyright easier to understand.
This is a great place to start if you do not know anything about copyright.
Petroc has copyright licences with the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA), Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) and Educational Recording Agency (ERA).
This means that staff and students can copy limited amounts of books, newspapers, and recorded materials that the College owns.
In general, when copying a book that the Library owns, you are permitted to copy either one chapter or up to 5% of a book, whichever is greater.
The CLA have a permissions checker, which you can use to determine if you can make a copy of a book. Click the button to access it and then search using the book's ISBN code.
If you are a member of staff copying materials for Classroom or Moodle it is important to have a record of the materials being copied and where they are being used.
Please note:
Each scan should be identified at least by author/artist and title of the publication and a statement that it was copied under the CLA Education Licence. It is good practice to also include the publisher, and ISBN or URL. If the digital copy does not include the source details you may need to add a cover sheet with this information.
When scanning a document please complete this form and send to the Print Room: Scanning form. You will need to make a copy of the document (click File -> Make a Copy).
The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) has also created the Education Platform to allow teachers to share digital copies of the Library's physical books with students. With this you can copy books from any device and any location as long as you are registered with a Petroc account.
There are benefits to using the Education Platform, including not needing to use a photocopier. You can also share links directly to Google Classroom making it more convenient for students to access.
You can find a video showing how to use the Education Platform here, or alternatively click to make an account at educationplatform.co.uk.
If a work (such as an image) has a Creative Commons licence, that means the creator has given permission for others to use and share it for certain purposes.
The video explains how you can use images, music, and more by following the terms of a Creative Commons license. Often you will need to attribute the author when you use their work.
