Gale Databases provides lots of searchable content to help with every stage of researching a project. There are lots of different databases to search between, including:
In Context databases that can explain new topics
Gale eBooks for reference books and encyclopaedias
Academic OneFile for academic articles
General OneFile for contemporary news articles
Historical archives for The Times, The Independent, The Economist and The Financial Times
The Business Insights database (more info below)
To search through all of these at once, click the Cross Search icon at the top. Searching in Power Search will look through all its newspapers, journals, In Context encyclopaedias and eBooks for information. You could also search Primary Sources to look at the newspaper archives.
You do not need to login to search Gale, but you can sign in with your Petroc login details if you want to download any files to your Google Drive. Teachers can also share anything directly to Google Classroom for students to see.
A playlist of videos to help you use Gale Databases can be found here.
The Gale Business Insights database has recently been updated to make it easier to use. You can now use it to search for a company, industry or country to find detailed financial history, look at a company's hierarchy and chief executive officers and look at its competitors.
Scrolling down the page on any profile also gives you links to academic and newspaper articles and other Gale resources to tell you more. As with Gale's other databases, these are full of accessible features and annotation tools.
The Business Insights database also lets you create instant comparison charts between companies looking at either their revenue or number of employees. Click the 'compare' icon in the top right of the toolbar and type in the businesses you are interested in to create an instant graph. You can then save this as a JPEG, PDF or Excel spreadsheet for your work.
You can use the same tool to compare entire industries, or countries with metrics such as their GDP or unemployment rate.
The video below shows how you can use the Business Insights database to find the information you need.
Gale provides citations for its resources at the bottom of the pages, however if you are using Gale as a source for a piece of work you should not use these directly.
You can use the information from the citation but you will need to use Cite Them Right to create the accepted format for your references.
More help can be found on the Library + site under Cite Them Right for full help to reference all your sources.
