Petchey News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Covid Update

As you will be aware, as of midnight tonight London goes in to a tougher Covid " Tier 2" measures. This means that in addition to the existing "Rule of 6", from midnight we are not allowed to meet socially indoors with people we do not live - this includes private homes, as well as pubs or restaurants. People in support bubbles can go on meeting as before and informal childcare may also be provided. Schools remain open at the moment.

You can find more information on the UK tier system here:

Throughout the pandemic my aim has been to pre-empt any changes in government policy and be ready for anything that will impact the school community. It's an incredibly tough time for everyone and I am ever grateful to all my staff, particularly the Leadership team, for their continued dedication to supporting our students throughout. Please be assured that we have plans in place to ensure continuity of education for all students should further restrictions in schools be brought in, and we continue to follow the government guidance for schools carefully. Please continue to reinforce to your child the importance of wearing a mask when inside the academy in order to help to limit any spread of infection.

It was extremely regretful that we had to send our Sixth Formers home for two weeks so I would also like to thank all our parents and carers for supporting us with this. Please continue to encourage them to make the absolute most of their time in school.

If you have any questions, queries or worries please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child's Tutor or one of the Year Team.

Warm regards

Clare Borrill, Headteacher

Uniform & PE kit standards

Unfortunately standards of personal presentation seem to have dropped a little this semester, particularly around PE kit.

Please ensure that your child comes to school in the correct uniform every day, and brings their own mask.

On PE or Dance days, students should be wearing the correct Petchey polo top and hoodie with plain black t shirts, shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a Petchey blazer over the top.

Plain black hoodies are acceptable if students do not have a Petchey top.

Branded items and colours other than black are not acceptable.

Reporting student absence

Please email absent@petcheyacademy.org.uk or call 0207 2751546.

Remember to let us know as early as possible if your child won't be in school on any given date.

Make sure you inform us exactly what his or her symptoms are.

Virtual Open Day

Sadly this year we haven't been able to host the usual open evening for prospective students and families of children in year 6, but we have created a virtual one which we thought you might enjoy having a look at. Please share it with any families you know that might be interested.

Gratitude increases resilience & mental strength

For years, research has shown gratitude not only reduces stress, but it may also play a major role in overcoming trauma.

A 2006 study published in Behavior Research and Therapy found that Vietnam War veterans with higher levels of gratitude experienced lower rates of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Recognizing all that you have to be thankful for —even during the worst times—fosters resilience.

Five Easy Ways you can Incorporate Gratitude into your Family Life

1. Gratitude Journal

Each day, either first thing in the morning or before bed, write down five things you are grateful for. Like I do, try not to re-use items and be specific. Say: “I am grateful for this beautiful sunny day because it makes me feel good,” and not, “I am grateful the sun is shining.”

2. Write Thank You Notes

Drop an email to someone who helped you at work, or to the teacher that goes the extra mile. Maybe even send an actual letter (gasp!) to a business that provided you with great service.

3. Make a habit of Paying Compliments

Make sure that you say something nice to someone every day. This will take a while (typically 21 days or so) to establish the habit, but it will make you feel better and brighten someone else’s day.

4. Challenge yourself to a No Complaining week

The inverse side of gratitude is complaining, so if we eliminate some of the time we spend whining, then we free up time to focus on more positive things. Complaining is a default status for many of us. We do it without even realizing it, and it simply creates a negative cycle. Challenge yourself to resist the urge to complain for one week. Employ the old, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all,” advice. (Was that Bambi or Thumper’s mother that said that?)

5. When bad things happen, remind yourself of the good

All too often, but it’s our reaction to negative events that dictates how quickly we bounce back. Remind yourself that this is only temporary and that you have overcome enormous challenges in the past and you WILL bounce back. If possible, try to see the lesson being offered by the difficult circumstance.

First and foremost, be nice to yourself. As they say, wherever you go, there you are and we need to be mindful of how we talk to ourselves. It’s hard to be grateful for anything if we speak unkindly to ourselves. There is good in you and in the world. Seek it out and reap the benefits!
