Explore sound samples from the Percy Grainger Home and Studio and create your own music
GLOSS is a collection of recorded sounds from the Percy Grainger Home and Studio in White Plains, NY. The sounds include samples of instruments in the collection and ambient sounds from the house and neighborhood. We invite you to explore and use these music files to create your own musical compositions and soundscapes.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Andrew Hugill as the Project Consultant for the Grainger Library of Sampled Sound (GLOSS).
The current project is directed at expanding GLOSS for use by neurodivergent people working in sound and music. This encompasses a wide spectrum of individuals with unique cognitive profiles, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological differences. Their needs often include tailored approaches to learning, sensory sensitivity considerations, and support in navigating the complexities of music and composing.

Experience the Grainger's lives in White Plains!
This eight-minute video photo montage illustrates the life of Percy Grainger, his mother Rose Grainger, and his spouse Ella Viola Ström Grainger, focusing on their time in White Plains, NY. The soundtrack is taken from a 1929 78 rpm disc recording of Percy Grainger playing his piano arrangement of Jutish Medley. Note the GLOSS sound sample at the start of the film! The video was created by Matthew McGarrell.
