Honors Students in Grades 9-12
The titles on the following page have been selected as required summer assignments in the designated courses. All Honors-level students in grades 9-12 must read the following novels for placement in honors in the fall in addition to a choice novel. Students may borrow the book from school or the public library for reading assignments. One of the most important goals of the summer assignment program is to engage students in activities that will prepare them for the upcoming curriculum in the new school year.
When students return to school in September, they will be asked to complete a graded constructed response and participate in discussions/ activities based on the required summer reading. Failure to complete this reading assignment will result in the student being subject to placement review.
***Students should take notes and/or stop and jot while reading to support reflection and critical thinking. The only notes that will be permitted for use on the assignments in the fall will be your Post-it reading notes from within your book.
Any questions or concerns over the summer may be directed to the ELA Supervisor, Ms. Alyssa Bellardino (alyssa.bellardino@pequannock.org)

It is important to take notes while reading to engage with the text. This process deepens understanding and prepares students for extension activities such as writing and discussion.
Note-taking and text annotation should eventually become natural and authentic as you evolve in your curiosity mindset. Here are some ideas (literary devices, critical thinking strategies, etc.) to kick-start your annotation task. Please use Post-its to mark passages and pages of interest, as these will be the only notes allowed for your writing task.
While there are many notetaking strategies and different questioning strategies to guide you, below are a few to get you started.
