30-6 Comets
The first game was a huge success for the middle school football team. We won 30-6 and had a lot of great plays. Connor Smeigh, the team’s quarterback, ran a few yards for a rushing touchdown and we followed up with the 2 point conversion.
One of the more noticeable plays was when Gavin McCauley, one of the running backs, ran up the sideline for around an 80 yard touchdown. Greyson Suydam and Gavin McCauley both made some tackles both from the defensive end position.
Towards the end of the game, Connor Smeigh threw a pass down the sideline to Kellen Kreider for a big gain inside the 10 yard line. There were a few times that Kaden Shaffer, an outside linebacker, came out of nowhere and made some big hits. Many players made tackles and helped on offense and it definitely paid off as we got a good team win.
Front Row: Quintin Hopstetter, Parker Hostetter, Grant Bradburn, Kellen Kreider.
Back Row: Elijah Hess, Bo Barton, Brayden Hickey, Justin Onderdonk.
This season went great since we had a 4-2 winning record. The season started at the beginning of the school year, but some of the players started earlier than that since there was a summer training at the 9th-grade field where we did drills for an hour and weightlifting for another.
Once school started, it was time for the actual season. We practiced every day other than weekends and game days. Every time the varsity team had a home game, some people ordered pizza, and we stayed after practice to eat the pizza then go watch the game.
We ended the season with a victory against McCaskey; we won 32-6. This season went great and I think the other players also thought so too. We are all looking forward to next season!
Every day after school we get bused to the high school and then we walk to the field house. We put our stuff in our lockers and get our gear out and then wait for the bus to bring us to Eshleman. We do a lap around the field and then get into multiple lines and do our daily dynamic stretching for about 10 minutes. When we're done with that, we gather around the coach, learn what the day will be like, he says a quote from a famous person, and then we break off. During all the practices, we get a minimum of 3 water breaks.
On a normal Monday, things feel slow. Players just got off a two-day break, and it is like we’ll not all going at full speed. We do a lot of ninth-grader stuff to get them ready for their game on Wednesday. We get into offense and then we do some drills as well. But we don’t do too much hitting; mainly we just go over 9-grader plays.
On Tuesdays, it’s the pregame for the 9th graders, so the coaches go over special teams with the 9th graders and we use the 7th and 8th opposite special teams to go against them. Then they go over the 9th-grade offensive and defensive plays.
On Wednesdays, it’s the 9th grader game, so the 8th and 7th graders are all by themselves to do their own plays and defensive looks, plus work on special teams. We make sure things are all set and that we know the plays.
Then comes the game on Thursday. We get bused to the school if it’s away but otherwise, if it’s home, we Marticville students just walk over to our field. When it’s game time, we do our stretches and then go over plays for about 10 mins.
On Friday it’s the whole team “7th, 8th, and 9th graders” all at the high school practice field by the locker room. We do our regular routine and then it starts the cycle by doing defense that day and then offense on Monday. And that's pretty much what we do on Fridays since we are let out an hour early since the high school has a game then and we’re allowed to come and watch for free. Plus we get free pizza from some very nice people.
Penn Manor Comets vs Conestoga Valley
16-0
Game Recap:
The other team ran the ball up the left side of the left guard and got a 40 yard touchdown and a two point conversion. In the second quarter Elijah Garland got an interception nothing happened until the fourth quarter when the other team scored a touchdown and a 2 point. Defensively we did well but we were not doing well offensively. We were at their practice field, it wasn't the best field, it was hard and only half of it was grass.
This game went poorly, but we are going to give our very best effort and not let them beat us next game at our own field.
Penn Manor Comets vs Cedar Crest Falcons:
38-8 Falcons
In the first quarter we had a good interception by Elijah Garland, but there was really nothing that happened in the second and third quarter but we drove the team upfield a lot but unfortunately we got a lot of penalties that put us back. The fourth quarter was probably the most exciting, Bo Barton scored a touchdown but unfortunately we didn't get the two points. Elijah Hess also made a sack in the end zone that resulted in a safety. Some good stuff we did was we had 3 sacks and 2 interceptions.
Penn Manor vs Susquehannock Warriors
24-8 Comets
Grant Bradburn had a 60 yard run. Then Kellen Kreider scored a touchdown and Grant Bradburn followed that up with the 2 points. Other team scored a touchdown and two points. The 2nd quarter started, Collin Robinson ran into a touchdown and Grant Bradburn got the two point, halftime was over, the third quarter had begun, Elijah Garland had an interception. The final quarter, almost won, Brayden hickey recovered a fumble in the last quarter.
This game was very fun to play and we hope it was fun to watch if you were there!
First quarter
A good bit happened in the first quarter that included a 5-yard touchdown by Jett Kroesen, a 2-point conversion by Elijah Garland, and another 2-point conversion by Grant Bradburn.
Second quarter
The second quarter was mostly both of the teams trying to get yards but Grant Bradburn scored a touchdown halfway through the quarter. We played really well in the first half and we hoped to play just as well in the second quarter.
Third quarter
The third quarter had a good deal of excitement; Grant Bradburn scored his second touchdown in the game and Kellen Kreider got a turn over.
Fourth quarter
In the fourth quarter Braden Kahl got a great touchdown. The other team also scored a rushing touchdown.
Note:
The varsity team won 21-17
9th grade team won 22-6
In the first quarter, the Comet's defense was backed up in their own end zone but fortunately, they were able to intercept the ball and save the Spartans from getting a touchdown. The Spartans were able to get a touchdown later in the quarter but they were unsuccessful to get a 2 point conversion with it. After that, the Comet's defense shut them down for pretty much the whole game.
In the second quarter, the Comets completely flipped the table. They had a great punt down the left side of the field causing bad field position for the Spartans. They stood roughly at around their own 25-yard line. Due to a high snap by the Spartans center, the ball landed in the end zone where their quarterback recovered the ball but was sacked causing a safety. The score going into halftime was (2-6) Spartans.
Both team's defenses played phenomenally well going into the second half. The Comets especially battled very tough and strategically. Having a lot of tackles and not allowing their opponent to get good yardage. Unfortunately, the Comets were unable to score in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter is where things got intense. The Comets were able to get down the field a lot of the time but failed to hit the nail on the coffin because of flags. But with only about one and a half minutes left the clock, the Comets were able to drive the ball downfield and get in the red zone. The Comets were about 4th & 5 on the series and were desperate for a first down. And luck was on their side this time around. The Comets count was on 2 and when the first hut was called by the QB, the entire defense jumped and had a neutral zone infraction resulting in a first down at around their 10-yard line. That lined up Grant Bradburn for a winning rushing touchdown to wrap up the game. And that means The Penn Manor Comets are (1-0)
