Please pack appropriate WORK clothes for hot humid weather. No matter your job, you may be asked to chip in and help clean here and there.
Patrick's favorite suggestion: A pen or pencil to write down the names and addresses of all the new friends you will make.
Here is a list compiled by volunteers over the years of things to bring:
Refillable water bottle. Please bring one!
Flashlight
Hat
Soap
Deodorant
Sunscreen (VHQ will have some but maybe not your favorite)
Bug spray (VHQ will have some)
Umbrella/rain gear/extra shoes and socks – if it rains, you will be getting wet
Light jacket, sometimes it can be chilly in the evenings (hopefully)
Shower flipflops
Closed-toe shoes and sensible shoes (Penland's terrain is hilly and uneven).
Pillow (every bed has a pillow, but you may prefer your own)
Small fan
Backpack or some type of small bag to put essentials in – you may be far from your housing during the day
Small cooler
Personal snacks
Blanket. There are sheets and towels in your room, warmer blankets are available upon request in VHQ. Are you flying? Don't worry, we've got you covered.
Small rug or dark towel for the floor next to your bed
Cash for buying art from new and old friends
Black pants/shorts/skirts and at least one white shirt. If you are a docent, spotter or vanna, your crew chief will contact you about appropriate clothing to bring.
Clothes to sweat in.
Bring your artwork for the Volunteer Art Exchange.
For those of you who are flying, please let Patrick know or work with someone you know to bring things for you.
