WELCOME FAQ
Thank you for volunteering!
The Annual Benefit Auction is a very important event that raises vital funds that support Penland’s studio, programs, and operations. YOU make that happen!
If you don’t find your answer here, please ask your crew chief, Volunteer Headquarters (VHQ), or your volunteer coordinator, Patrick Beggs.
Accidents of any kind: Please report any personal injury, vehicular accidents, and damage to Penland property immediately to VHQ (lower clay studio). First aid kits are located in VHQ, the Pines, Lily Loom (main office), and all studios.
Alcohol and Drugs: No consumption of alcohol while on or before going on duty. No consumption of alcohol by anyone below the age of 21 (NC law). No illegal drugs. Excessive drinking is strictly prohibited, at any time. Violators will be escorted off campus. Take care of each other – that’s when life works best!
Coffee at the Barns: This event and the hand made coffee mugs are for ticket holders only. Please don’t go to the Barns on Saturday morning. If there are extra mugs they will be made available at the volunteer party.
Bid Numbers: If you would like to bid on artwork, you may register on line here. Bid numbers are free to volunteers. Absentee Bidding can bid on your behalf and help you with any questions, for information about Absentee Bidding please contact Cindy Gibson via email at bidding@penland.org or phone at 828.765.2359 x1308.
Driving on campus: OBSERVE THE ONE-WAY ROUTES - NO EXCEPTIONS!! Volunteers driving Penland vehicles or golf carts must complete a driver safety form in VHQ.
Emergencies: For life threatening emergencies, call 911 first, then send someone to find a staff member or crew chief. Emergency phone lists and addresses are centrally posted in all housing, the Pines, VHQ, and the studios. All Penland Campus roads have names, and the buildings have emergency addresses. If you call 911 stay on the phone until they say it’s okay to hang up.
Housing Assignment: Available in VHQ. Please stay in your assigned room. People are coming and going on different days. An empty bed does not mean an available bed, no matter what your friends tell you. Housing will be posted by 4pm Wednesday.
Housing Issues: See Patrick – find him by way of VHQ.
Housing – Departing: Please move out of your room by 9am on Sunday. Strip your bed and leave all towels and sheets on the bed.
Job Assignments: Posted in VHQ. You may be on more than one crew.
Jobs – Need something to do between jobs? Check in at VHQ – we always have jobs to do. If no one needs help, then enjoy the break and have a snack or Bedazzle your T-shirt for Saturday.
Kitchen: Off Limits! Don’t go in there! Any questions – ask your crew chief or the Pines Crew Chief.
Litter: See a wrapper, pick it up; all day long you’ll have good luck!
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served at the Pines - the schedule will be posted in the Pines and in VHQ.
Meetings: 1pm Wednesday / 8:45 am Thursday / 8:45 am Friday / 8:45 am Sunday. No Saturday meeting. We meet on the Pines portico. Missed a meeting? Ask your crew chief or VHQ.
Parking: Oh, PARKING! Do not park in a handicap or reserved space – don’t do it! Do not park next to planting barrels or dumpsters – don’t do it. Do not park on the road behind or above the Pines or the loading areas directly behind the Pines. Please, park in the designated areas on campus. Check the parking maps posted in VHQ and the Pines. Put your parking slip inside your windshield.
Photo Booth: Yup, that’s right – photo booth! Saturday night, during the volunteer party.
Poison Ivy: It’s everywhere. Lots of soap and water and the friction of a washcloth will help remove the oil from your skin. Three Leaves See – Let It Be!
Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Start with VHQ or your crew chief.
Quiet Hours: 11PM – 7AM. Not kidding. Please respect the sleep. Violate quiet hours and we wake you up at 5AM to make us coffee. This means Patrick has to get up to wake you up, and Patrick likes his sleep!
Refreshments: Need refreshments in between meals? VHQ has got it all.
Recycle: everything you can. Blue bins are placed strategically around campus.
Saturday Night: Be at your volunteer party!
Sunday: Help make campus beautiful again. If you are staying Saturday night, please consider working for a few hours on Sunday morning after breakfast and before you have lunch in the Pines. Volunteers staying to help get late checkout privileges.
