Things to Celebrate this Summer!
JULY is...
National Anti-Boredom Month: Yaaaassss...summer! Climb a mountain, have a picnic, float down the river with your friends, explore something new, read a book, volunteer, start a new hobby, help your neighbor, go for a moonlight hike, visit the ocean, go blueberry picking, create something, sooooo many options!
National Culinary Arts Month: Make something delicious...bonus points for using local, seasonal food! It is also National Grilling Month, National Horseradish Month, National Hot Dog, National Peach Month, National Picnic Month, National Baked Bean Month, National Blueberry Month! Sounds like the perfect BBQ!!!
National Ice Cream Month: YES PLEASE!!! Did you know that New Englanders consume more ice cream than anyone else in the world?! You can make your own ice cream at home, or visit one of the MANY local ice cream stands!
World UFO Day (July 2): Did you know that one of the most famous and well documented alien abductions happened in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (not very far away from PRHS)?! Barney and Betty Hill claimed that they experienced a close encounter with an unidentified flying object and lost two hours of time while driving south on Route 3 near Lincoln in September of 1961!
Independence Day (July 4): Celebrate our countries independence! On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. The Constitution provides the legal and governmental framework for the United States, however, the Declaration, with its eloquent assertion “all men are created equal,” is equally beloved by the American people. Fireworks, cookouts, sparklers, parades, swimming...how will you celebrate?!
National Video Game Day (July 8): Did you know that Minecraft is the #1 selling video game of all time selling over 180 million copies?! Tetris (created in 1984) is in second place selling 170 million copies!
National Moon Day and Space Exploration Day (July 20): Get outside and look up! We are so lucky to be able to see the stars in New Hampshire!!! You might even see some fireflies and bats, or hear an owl (there are 11 species of owls in NH)!
Harry Potter's Birthday Day (July 31): Read or listen to a Harry Potter book, cast your favorite spells, have a Harry Potter movie night, learn how to draw a Niffler, read some fan fiction, gather some friends for a friendly game of Quidditch, go on a HP scavenger hunt, make some butterbeer, take a HP quiz, play Harry Potter Wizards Unite, wear your house colors with pride, or make a wand! Remember, that today is also Neville Longbottom's special day! Show him some love too!
AUGUST is...
Happiness Happens Month: August is dedicated to celebrating things that make you happy! Your happiness is part of something bigger, the entire world is a better place when we connect with and care about the people around us. Think about what REALLY makes you happy (your authentic happiness), and make sure to incorporate it into your routine each day. One of the best things about your authentic happiness is that it can be anything (cuddling with a pet, hiking, snowmobiling, being creative, volunteering, cooking, hunting, playing video games, walking with a friend, playing a sport, singing, making TikTok videos, laughing, exercising, treating yourself to some chocolate, writing down things you are grateful for, meditating, setting goals for the future, gardening, mastering a new skill, etc., etc., etc.).
American Artist Appreciation Month: Be an artist and create something new, give a shoutout to your favorite artists, visit an art museum (you can get free or discounted tickets from Pease Public Library using your FREE library card to The Currier Museum of Art, The Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston!), go to a play, listen to some live music (the New Hampshire Music Festival comes to Plymouth every summer and many performances are free!), watch a documentary, dance, write or read a poem!
International Peace Month: “True peace is not merely the absence of tension, but the presence of justice.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While we may not all be in a position to negotiate world peace or put forth national legislature that addresses the inequalities, we all can strive to better understand others, resolve conflict, and celebrate our differences.
National Sandwich Month: Eat a Sandwich, or visit Sandwich, NH (OR EAT A SANDWICH IN SANDWICH...WHAT?!).
THE PERSEIDS METEOR SHOWER: This extraordinary annual meteor shower peaks from early to mid August delighting viewers with 90+ shooting stars an hour (90+ wishes an hour?! Totally magical)!
National Mountain Climbing Day (August 1): Lucky you to live in a land surrounded by mountains to explore! Visit the White Mountains, or stay local by hiking Plymouth Mountain (Plymouth), Rattlesnake Mountain (Rumney), Mount Livermore (Holderness), Whitten Woods (Ashland), Mount Tecumseh (Waterville Valley), Carr Mountain (Wentworth / Warren), Dickey Mountain (Thornton), and so many more!!!
National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day (August 4): YUM! This may be hard to believe, but this classic cookie favorite was actually the product of an accident! In 1938, Ruth Graves Wakefield, the baker and owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts ran out of baker's chocolate to make her cookies, so she decided to use a normal semi-sweet chocolate bar instead. The baker's chocolate would have just melted into the cookie dough, however, the chunks of semi-sweet chocolate did not mix with the dough, but filled the cookies with chunks of chocolate. Celebrate by baking a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies and sharing them with your family, friends and neighbors!
Purple Heart Day (August 7): The Purple Heart Medal is a decoration awarded by the President of the United States to the soldiers of the U.S. military who were wounded or killed while serving their country, on or after April 5, 1917. To thank soldiers for their service, you can volunteer with the of many local organizations that help Veterans and their families or write a letter of appreciation.
Book Lovers Day (August 9): Mmmmm, the BEST DAY OF SUMMER! Grab your favorite book or something new, pack some snacks up and find a beautiful place to read the day away!
Poet's Day (August 21): Today is dedicated to the celebration of poets and the poetry that they create! To celebrate you can read a poem, write a poem, share a poem, perform a poem, discover a new poet, collaborate with a friend to write a poem, or re-visit a favorite poetry collection! Here are just a few collections of poetry and books written in verse that you can check out from the PRHS Learning Commons!
