"Lest we forget"

Veterans Day, always observed on November 11th, honors all of those who have served within the United States in war or peace , dead or alive; although it is largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices and service. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I.

Other countries such as Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and France also celebrate their own version of Veterans Day.

The PRHS Learning Commons has a strong collection of notable fiction and nonfiction highlighting stories of wartime. Looking for more titles? Check out the War | Conflict collection (this collection is more focused on a global scale).

Did you know that after World War I, Poppies were adopted as the symbol of remembrance and honor for veterans around the world? In the United States however, we wear the symbolic red flower on Memorial Day to commemorate the sacrifice for all those who have given their lives fighting for our country.

In Flanders Fields

BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

How to Show Your Gratitude

2. Purchase or cook a meal for a homeless veteran.

3. Fly an American flag .

4. Ask a veteran to share their stories about their time in service and listen patiently (need some inspiration? Checkout the Military Military Voices and the Veterans History Project)!

5. Send a veteran a thank you card to let them know how much you appreciate their service.

6. Participate or volunteer at a community event that supports veterans.

7. Say 'Thank you for your service' when you meet a veteran.

8. Strive to be worth the sacrifice (be kind, generous, honorable and thankful everyday for your freedom).
