Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, was originally the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. At the end of the 5th century (Jan 1, 401 AD – Dec 31, 500 AD), Pope Gelasius I, replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America (contrary to popular belief, the Hallmark Company did not create the holiday)!
