“To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.”

– Nelson Mandela

Each December we celebrate Universal Human Rights Month! This is a time to reflect on the way we treat others, and to think about what we can do as a community and as individuals to ensure world-wide equality. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights empowers us all! National Humans Rights Day, adopted in 1948, is celebrated on December 10th. Although Article I of the Declaration states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”, many people around the world have not experienced this truth. Daily, individuals face discrimination and persecution because of their race, national origin, gender, religion, age, language, social class, or other status.

The PRHS Learning Commons has a strong collection of notable fiction, nonfiction and graphic novels highlighting stories of human rights, social justice and diversity. “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

– Elie Wiesel
