December 11th is 'International Mountain Day'! We are so lucky to live right at the base of the New Hampshire White Mountains (which covers a quarter of our state and are the most rugged mountains in New England)!

With a height of 6,288.2 feet, Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States and is notorious for its erratic weather (it is also know as the most dangerous small mountain in the world)! Since 1849 , 150 people have perished on the mountain. While each death is tragic, 23 year old Lizzie Bourne, who died only a few feet away from shelter at the Tip-Top-House, goes down in history as one of the most devastating. Today, you can see a monument beside the Cog Railway that commemorates the spot where she perished. Mount Washington is also known for it's alpine garden, the home of the Dwarf Cinquefoilm, a small perennial member of the rose family which only grows on the mountain (no other place on earth)!
