Mr. Jackson's Close-Call
Did you know our history department's very own, Mr. Jackson, originally didn’t set out to teach history?
"What was a pivotal moment in your career that got you to where you are today?"
“Essentially, I got into teaching only because of a baseball camp. In college, I helped out as a counselor for a baseball camp that we ran for kids in the area. I enjoyed working with the kids on baseball fundamentals, techniques, etc. My original plan was to go into the criminal justice/psychology field, but I changed that because of this camp. I found it more rewarding doing this, which I would think allows for more positive interactions than working in criminal justice.” -Mr. Jackson
"Have you traveled? Tell us what you've gotten out of seeing other parts of the world- generally or with specific places."
"Yes, my favorite place that I've visited was London. I enjoyed seeing all of the Gothic/Renaissance architecture. When I retire, I plan on traveling much more with the time I'll have. Of course, I want to travel throughout the rest of Europe and see many other countries there, but the place I want to visit the most is Japan. Their culture is so unique and interesting, and I'm looking forward to going there someday."
Mr. King's Karaoke Expertise
Did you know Mr. King can sing it out during karaoke?
Can you play any instruments? Do you sing? If so, what songs can you play or belt out to? (Anything you consider your talent)
“I love karaoke", Mr. King tells us. King shared a story about when he and his friend's wives turned 50 and planned to take them to Jamaica to celebrate! One night on this vacation, Mr. King's friend signed him up for a karaoke night without telling him. He performed "Gambler" by Kenny Rogers.
When asked if he was nervous during the performance, he responded, “No, honestly I don’t think I have stage fright you know because of what I do for a living. And also I was on vacation so I didn’t know anyone there.”
Mrs. Kelley's Past Adventures
Did you know one of Pembroke's assistant principals, Vice Principal Kelley, spent time working at UCLA?
Ms. Kelley spent time throughout a summer working at UCLA, in doing so, she opened many doors for herself. She was able to attend a red carpet to the 2002 Action movie, XXX, starring Vin Diesel. She also met multiple celebrity kids working at the university, like Darren Star, along with Charles Schwabb's son. Unfortunately, while she was there she blew out her knee during the UCLA summer camp, but overall says that she enjoyed her time there.
Fun Fact: Did you know Ms. Kelley has taught Spanish in the past? She has also lived in Spain for a couple of months!

by Olivia DeMinico
Ms. Savoia began working as the long-term substitute teacher for Ms. Motta on November 29, 2023. She is originally from Pembroke and attended the Pembroke Public Schools up until 8 grade, where she then attended Cardinal Spellman for all of high school. She previously worked in the Pembroke district as a long-term substitute art teacher back in 2006. She has been an art educator and a Visual Arts Department Head.
Ms. Savoia sat down to answer a few questions for the Titan Times:
What college did you attend and what was your major?
“ I attended UMass Dartmouth and graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine arts, a post-back degree in art education, and a master's degree in art education.”
Why did you choose to sub at Pembroke High School?
“I am from Pembroke and grew up here. My little brother went here and was the first graduating class of Pembroke High School. I live locally in Kingston and I have an 18-month-old daughter. I stayed home with her until it was time for me to work again, then I saw the job request and realized now it’s time for me to come home.”
What made you want to pursue an art career?
“Ever since I was young, people have told me that art wasn’t a career, but that it was a hobby. I wanted to prove that I could be an artist, so I worked at Modern Art Foundry Astoria Queens. I looked at art as an expression of myself, and I love every type of art. Being creative is who you are and I wanted to prove that art gives you life skills and the creative process shows you how to live in the world. Art helps you think differently and innovatively.”
How does she feel about filling in for Ms. Motta for the rest of the year?
“ I have mixed emotions about it. I feel sad because I have never covered for people in this type of circumstance before and it also hits a soft spot because I have had loved ones who have had cancer. I am happy to help her out and be a good fill in for her with my experience. However, it’s hard to fill her shoes because the kids love her and she is an amazing person.”
What is your favorite part about your job?
“ My favorite part is that I get to teach kids that love art. I come in here and the kids want to be here. It’s hard to be an art teacher and teach kids art who are only taking this class because they have to, but these kids are taking it because they want to. I also get to share my experience with them.”
