Amnesty International is a club that advocates for human rights and justice. This club gathers young students who are devoted to promoting justice and protecting individuals' and groups rights around the globe. In the club, students learn about social issues in various countries, and they aim to raise awareness about these issues around the school and outside. They advocate for refugee rights, freedom of speech, the fight against discrimination, and so much more.
“Amnesty is a great club for people who want to be involved in the world and help to make a difference. You can help promote human rights and raise awareness of important social issues happening outside of the US that you might not hear about,” says Publicity Coordinator, Catie Flaherty.
The club organizes fundraising events such as bake sales and makes posters promoting their causes. Their latest fundraisers included running a bake sale during parent-teacher conferences and raising money for Ukraine.
Amnesty International meets every other Thursday at 2:30 pm in room A262 and the meetings generally last around half an hour but can go longer. The club’s President is Senior, Christopher Regan, and the club’s new advisor is Ms. McDonough.
Ms. McDonough became the new advisor for the club at the beginning of this year and she explained how she was thrilled to take on the role. "Since the club directly aligns with a course I teach, when the Amnesty advisor position became available I jumped at the chance," says Ms. McDonough.
Currently, Amnesty International has 13 members, but they are always looking for more students to become involved in their club.
