Your exams are right around the corner! Don't take them for granted!
Mid-year exams are coming up quickly! Whether it is your first time experiencing the exams or you have already experienced it, it is a very important time of the school year. The exams will be taking place the week of January 16th-January 19th. Each exam is worth 10% of a student's grade so make sure to take them seriously!
With the days leading up to the exams along with the three day weekend with Martin Luther King Jr. day before the exams, students should make sure to use their time wisely and study for their exams. There are many opportunities provided by the school to help students study. For example on January 11 at 6:30 PM the school will be holding the Cocoa and Cram night for students in grades 9 and 10 to attend. Here students will have the opportunity to bounce around from classroom to classroom and meet with their teachers as well as students of the upper class to receive help in studying for their exams. Students will also be treated with hot chocolate and many different treats to enjoy while studying. It is a great and helpful opportunity for students to study for their exams and it is encouraged that students attend! Also Friday, January 12, before the exams will be a Day 0. So students will be able to meet with all of their classes and the day will be dedicated strictly to studying for the mid year exams. Many teachers will most likely provide students with a study guide to use over the weekend. We would suggest that students spend between 30 min-1hr studying for each class midterm each night. It will help students make sure that they are fully prepared when they walk through the doors for their exams.
ATTENTION SENIORS!!! If you have a 90% or better in any half year class, you do not need to take the exam. You do not need to come in for it either. If you have a full year class you do need to take the mid year exam. But if you have a 90% or better in your full year class by the end of the year, you do not need to take that final. For students with a study period, you do not have to show up for that period either. So you can come in late, leave early, or if the period lands on the final day you do not even need to show up.
Lastly, there will be no buses after school so students must find a ride home or stay until the late buses come at 2:20. Students who intend to take the bus must notify the office before 7:30 AM that they will be doing so. Also if the students waiting for the buses are in need of lunch, they must also notify the office before 7:30 AM and a brown-bag lunch will be provided.
That's about it. Just a reminder to study hard and good luck!

At 18, many doors open for you for the very first time. For example, you can now vote! Voting registration is available online, through printed form. You must register 10 days before the primaries and general elections. For more information on voting registration and voter status, check out https://www.boston.gov/departments/elections/how-register-vote. Even if between 16 and 18, a student can pre-register to vote to get ahead of the semi-time-consuming process of signing up!
Some other things 18-year-olds newly have access to are:
Buy your scratch ticket
You can buy and use spray paint
Vote!- voting registration, process, and things to consider
Buy your car
Work full time
Medically consent to one's medical care
Legally change your name
Buy a pet
Get a tattoo or piercing
Join the military
Serve on a jury
We interviewed some seniors to get their opinions on turning 18:
Adrianna Perkins
Q- Out of the list above which of those excites you, personally, the most about turning 18?
A- I like to express myself with tattoos and piercings and being able to do that with only my consent is freeing.
Q- What would you do if you got called to a jury?
A- I would love that! If it's a civil case, criminal, or whatever I would eat that up.
(Adrianna says if there’s any humanitarian issue she’s there)
Q- What do you think will be most different for you this year as an adult?
A- Well… college, independence, and finding myself as a person. It’s scary but I’m looking forward to it.
Emmy DiDomenico
Q: What are the first thoughts that come to mind when you think about your upcoming birthday?
A: “It’s a lot. It feels like a big step, and I feel I have to get a lot accomplished.”
Q: What’s a new responsibility that you are soon to have and are apprehensive about
A: “Being on my own. College-wise, even though I’m probably not going to go too far from home, the pressure of being on my own is something that scares me. Everything I’ve ever known, my friends and family, aren’t going to be in my proximity for the first time, for a long time.”
