PHS Alum O’Malley’s Comedy Career Takes Off
by Maggie O'Malley
A member of the class of 2017, Grace O'Malley, a NYC-based comedian, and creator with almost one million followers on Tik Tok, has recently joined Alex Cooper's Unwell Network, a media platform launched by Alex Cooper, host of the popular podcast "Call Her Daddy," which focuses on content related to pop culture, lifestyle, fashion, beauty, and other topics relevant to younger generations.
Growing up, O’Malley was always cracking jokes to make her family, friends, and even teachers laugh. It is no surprise that she is now a full-time comedian.
After high school, Grace attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst. O’Malley stated “When I finally went to a 4 year college after ripping it up at community college, I still had that tiny voice begging for attention. I always wanted to be a standup comedian but if I had to be reasonable I figured I could one day make Super Bowl commercials with my communications degree. Therefore, I'd still be able to slip humour into a 9-5”. She started sharing her humorous-driven videos through TikTok in February 2019. During the midst of COVID-19, she decided to drop out of her classes and move to New York City to achieve her goals.
Moving to New York was the best decision that she made for her career. O’Malley says “Mr.Shannon told me I had to either learn a trade or join the military. So if you’re a senior and unsure what you want to do I truly suggest following whatever the lil voice in your head is suggesting. Sometimes that voice is loud, sometimes it's a thought you think is silly to even consider it.” Starting Door Dashing by foot in the harsh weather conditions of NYC just to make ends meet, selling out 7 shows in Boston this past January takes a lot of hard work, time, and dedication.
Throughout her career so far, O'Malley has taken many opportunities, including interviewing celebrities on red-carpet events for Netflix's Roast of Tom Brady and The Dance Moms Reunion, working with People Magazine, opening for well-known comedian Whitney Cummings, and is currently on her first headlining tour, The Down For Anything Tour. She is continuously selling out shows thanks to her loyal fans. I had a chance to speak with O'Malley about her experiences from high school to where she is now at 26 years old. Here is what she had to say: “I’ll give you one more key rule of advice that no one asked for from a goof who tells jokes for a living, whatever plan you have now will most likely not turn out how you think it's all going to. There's something both freeing and disheartening about all that. Try to lean on the freeing side of it all.”
