This month's teacher feature is on English and Journalism teacher Amanda Mrowka. The Titan Times sat down for an interview. Here's what we learned:
Where did you go to High School?
"Oliver Ames High School in Easton."
Did you do any extracurriculars in High School?
"Student Council and Track."
Where did you go to college and what did you major in?
“Northeastern and majored in journalism.”
What classes do you teach?
“Journalism and sophomore English, and in the past I taught senior English. I am so glad that Journalism has returned to PHS. I enjoy working with the students to create the monthly paper."
What previous teaching experience did you have before coming to Pembroke?
“I started teaching in 1999 at Silver Lake, where I taught English, Creative Writing and Journalism.”
Was it always your plan to become a teacher?
“I wasn't my plan to become a teacher originally. At NU I did co-ops at magazines and newspapers. After graduation I was hired to work full time at a Boston PR firm. I worked there for 8 years. After that I went back to school and got my teaching certificate at Bridgewater State University.”
Do you have any hobbies outside of school?
"I love to travel, try to play golf, love the New York Times crosswords, love reading, and love going to the beach in the summer."
What has helped you through your teaching career?
“Raising two boys has helped me appreciate the high school experience from their perspectives. One of my sons excelled in school, while the other one struggled a bit. That helped me become a better teacher, I hope.”
