Art is creativity. It presents itself through music, literature, painting, sculpture, and so much more. To me, art showcases truth, identity, and love.
The January 2025 artist of the month is Sophia Hall, a senior at Pembroke High School, who showcases her deep regard for creativity and exerts her artistic passion through both 2-D and 3-D art styles. Currently enrolled in AP 2-D Studio art and design, Hall has always had a passion for inventiveness and individuality.
“I think I dedicated my first sketchbook in about the fifth grade," Hall says, as her talents have only extended with daily practice and a constant flow of sketching and doodling. Her AP Art portfolio is based around myths- greek, roman, norse, and more. Her core pieces depict revelations in life throughout time, and how she has dealt with the many obstacles that life can bring- through adolescence, teenage years, and maturing into adulthood. Her latest finished piece depicts Icarus, and his fall from his stretch towards the sun, representing “reaching for the stars” and aiming high to achieve goals. Hall’s detailed and imaginative pieces allow onlookers to gaze and sympathize with the teenage struggle- the human struggle- to become successful in life, love, and aspirations.
Her most recent piece is a 3-D sculpture for the Attleboro Art Competition in early May of this year, where eight schools will compete to explore themes of balance and symmetry. Out of all of the students within her 3-D Art class, her design depicting the balance between industrialization and nature took first place, and is the inspiration for Pembroke High School's submission to this competition. Hall is leading her class on creating her sketched masterpiece, having students collaborate together or individually experiment with different 3-D techniques to create a finalized, and hopefully winning sculpture.
“I’m very satisfied with the progress of this piece!” Hall said, and hopes to continue on a steady path of success on completing it to fit the consistent concepts within the sketched piece.
With support school wide, Hall's dreams of following a career in animation will only extend their parameters following the accomplishments of both her AP Portfolio and her work for the upcoming competition.
The artist of the month title could not be more deserving, Sophia Hall exceeds skill and technical ability with her creativeness and expressive artistic style.
