This course introduces both the variety and requirements for health care careers. Basic core knowledge and professional expectations common to all health careers are explored. Workplace safety and an overview of the health system and current trends are also covered.

Students will build a medical vocabulary through an understanding of anatomic roots for words denoting body structures, prefixes, suffixes, and body functions.

HEALTH OCCUPATIONS 2

CNA Course Requirements:

  1. The State of Iowa requires 90% attendance for all lectures, labs, and clinical sessions. This is strictly enforced.

  2. Students must earn a minimum of 80% to receive a passing grade in HSC 172: Nurse Aide and HSC 182: Advanced Nurse Aide. This passing grade must also be earned for the student to be eligible to complete the board testing at the end of the course.

PREREQUISITE: Criminal/Abuse background check; Immunization form as required by clinical site; Flu vaccine-October through April.


Students will learn entry-level skills to seek employment in Iowa skilled facilities. Meets OBRA87 standards. Course HSC 172 requires extended clinical sessions in evenings and/or weekends.

COLLEGE CREDIT: 3 DMACC Credits - HSC 182

PREREQUISITE: Nurse Aide, passing both sections of the Certified Nursing Aide Competency Exam, or a State-approved 75-hour nurse aide class; Criminal/Abuse background check; Physical and Immunization form as required by clinical site; Flu vaccine-October through April; CPR certification.


This course is a continuation of Nurse Aide to provide additional skills and clinical skills to work in a hospital. Course HSC 182 requires extended clinical sessions in evenings and/or weekends.
