Single person dwellings, apartments, condos, and townhomes. Elements and principles of design and color, types of architecture, housing styles will be studied. Understanding common blueprint symbols, evaluating and drawing floor plans. Planning the use of space, line, and form in kitchen, bath, bedroom, dining and living room/den. Discuss selection and use of major and small appliances, floor coverings, and case goods. Selection of furniture styles and uses, softwoods vs. hardwoods, solid vs. bonded wood, types of furniture joints. Study professional layout and lettering of housing presentations. View careers in housing and interiors.

FACS of Life is a brief overview of the many Family Consumer Science classes offered at Pella High School. This course includes an introduction to decision making, problem-solving, communication, relationships, family life, budgeting, on-line banking, beginning personal finance principles, basic food preparation and nutrition, kitchen safety and sanitation principles as well as an introduction into child development and housing design principles.

This is an introductory course emphasizing all aspects of the clothing industry from production to consumption. It is intended for the student with little or no sewing experience. This course includes the construction of 2 or more simple garments and/or projects. We also discuss elements of design, color, and garment styles, selecting appropriate fabrics for a line, identifying group and item lines. In the sewing component: application of basic construction techniques, terminology and embellishing including fabric purchasing and care. Understanding basic machine use and maintenance of sewing machines and sergers.


(For this course students will be provided with “base” supplies for the sewing projects. Students then can purchase their finished product. However, some students prefer to choose and purchase their own fabrics that can average up to $50.00 depending on student chosen fabrics and projects.)

College Credit Transfer Details: The high school offers college credit courses for students but remember, it is the students’ responsibility to request transcripts to be sent to their college of choice for transfer of credits. There is a form in the guidance office to assist you with this process. Important note: your GPA received in these courses MAY affect your college GPA. This will depend on which college you attend. The students will demonstrate kitchen safety and sanitation requirements for basic food preparation. Through the use of a peer, students will integrate recipe reading skills, proper measurement skills, preparation skills, and solutions for meal preparation clean up. Students will also demonstrate food storage principles, portion control skills, nutrition requirements using myPlate in food presentations and beginning cooking techniques.

In the course, you will learn about how to manage your digital footprint, professional email etiquette, cyberbullying, and how to tell if something is fact or fake in the area of news and information. Some additional professional areas of learning will be: recognizing and understanding communication styles (passive & aggressive communication & reading nonverbal communication); active listening skills; group communication (group dynamics, group interaction & communication); digital communication (benefits, pitfalls & necessary guidelines); Disagreements and conflicts (Is conflict bad?, avoiding conflict, conflict resolution); Negotiation and compromise; Constructive Criticism (personal criticism, offering criticism and receiving criticism).
