My name is Nicole Bridge, and it is my honor and privilege to be the Math Coach for Pelham Elementary School! In my role, I get to partner with teachers in different ways to help them grow their students as mathematical thinkers and learners.
Here at PES, we are working to foster a culture and community of math that helps every child and adult understand that…
Math makes sense and we are all capable of making sense of it
EVERY person is a math person!
In our classrooms, our students are engaging with standards-aligned, grade-level content using a variety of representations (hands-on tools, visual models, and with numbers and symbols), discourse, and problem-solving to develop number sense, conceptual understanding, and procedural fluency that they can use to apply to real-world situations.
Our students are thinking and talking about math in meaningful ways all throughout the day, not just during math class. Interactive math bulletin boards and Paw Print challenges (Notice and Wonder, Which One Doesn’t Belong?, Same but Different) throughout the building give our students repeated opportunities to interact with math in fun and casual ways outside of math class. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a group of students walking down the hall stop to measure their height, count how many in a picture, place a new shape to continue a pattern, or discuss a “Which One Doesn’t Belong?” image.
I am proud of the work that we are doing and the math community that we are building here at PES, and am honored to be part of it every day!
