Disturbance in Tropical Ecosystems

Non-native mangrove ecosystem services
In their native range, mangroves provide a suite of ecosystem functions and services. What about in locations where they are introduced?
We examined the role of intentionally introduced, non-native mangroves in providing habitat for zooplankton and larval fish and invertebrates as well as the social values, attitudes and perceptions about mangroves among residents on the island of Molokai.
Further research was done examining the role of non-native mangroves in trapping and uptake of contaminants. This research involved studying the concentration of pesticide and microplastic contamination in the sediment, porewater, and root tissues of mangroves and comparing these values to the sediment concentration in adjacent areas of coastline not modified by non-native mangrove. Sites for this study were selected from areas of differing urban development and population.
