The LCVP is a Leaving Certificate programme with an enhanced vocational dimension which has a strong focus on enterprise in the home, school and community. This two-year programme combines the academic strengths of the Leaving Certificate (established) with a dynamic focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community. What makes LCVP different is that students select to study some of their Leaving Certificate subjects from a specified set of vocational subjects (sample list circular 0040/2013 ). Students also study a recognised course in a modern European language and have two additional courses, called Link Modules, in the areas of Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education.
The primary goal of the LCVP is to prepare young people for adult life by ensuring that they are educated in the broadest sense, with an ability to cope and thrive in an environment of rapid change. Participants in the programme are encouraged to develop skills and competencies fundamental to both academic and vocational success.
Each of the Link Modules consists of four units as shown below, each with a selection of specific learning outcomes.
On completion of the programme, students must present a portfolio of work completed over their two years of study, comprising six items; four compulsory or “core” items and two optional items. This accounts for 60 percent of their final grade. A final written examination takes place in May of sixth year and accounts for the remaining 40 percent of the students’ grade. Candidates are awarded one of four grades upon completion of the programme: distinction, merit, pass or unsuccessful. NB: Alternative arrangements have been put in place for the academic year 2020/2021 and can be viewed on education.ie by clicking here.
