Recording Demonstrations

Introduction

Recording demonstrations is a simple way to generate video content to share with your school community.

Teachers can:

  • produce a recording showing a particular skill or technique that students can access at any time

  • collaborate with peers to produce a library of subject specific demonstrations

Equipment you may have in your school that can be used to record demonstrations include mobile phones, tablets, visualisers, laptops, microphones and tripods.

Case Study A

A DCG teacher in a post-primary school in the midlands regularly uses a visualiser purchased by the school to record live drawings. In her recording, she outlines processes and key information. She then posts the link to her instructional recording on the school's VLE so that learners can access these resources from home.

Case Study B

A maths teacher in a rural post-primary school uses a tablet and stand to record himself completing sample equations, explaining each step of the process. These videos are then shared with students who can access them at a time that is suitable and rewatch them at their own pace. The teacher also shares these instructional videos with other maths teachers in the school.

Curricular examples of where recorded demonstrations could be used

Example of recording a video demonstration

  • Home Economics: demonstrate how to do a crochet slip stitch.

  • Technology: demonstrate how to solder a 6 pin switch to achieve forward and reverse direction.

  • Art: showcase a detailed sketching technique.

  • Woodwork: demonstrate how a mortice and tenon joint is constructed.

Live streaming

Using Google Meet

Only guests in your organisation can view a live stream. All participants in your organisation can stop and start the stream during the meeting, and record the event. Guests who join as 'view-only' can’t participate in the meeting or control streaming and recording.

Using YouTube

Only guests in your organisation can view a live stream. All participants in your organisation can stop and start the stream during the meeting, and record the event. Guests who join as 'view-only' can’t participate in the meeting or control streaming and recording.

Using Microsoft Teams Live Events

You can create a live event using Microsoft Teams or Stream. Teams live events is an extension of Teams meetings, enabling educators to broadcast video and meetings to learners online. These videos are meant for one-to-many communications where the educator is leading the interactions and learners participation is primarily to view the content.
