The Little Boy who Lived Down the Drain

Minds On

What might all these images have in common?

Where might you find them?

What might happen?

Let's Read!

Learning Goals

  • I am learning how to express personal thoughts and feelings about what has been read
  • I am learning how to sort ideas and information to express my thinking
  • I am learning how to create short texts using a few simple text forms
  • I am learning how to describe relative locations and the movement of objects
  • I am learning how to to identify right angles and to describe angles as greater than, equal to, or less than a right angle
  • I am learning how to create multimedia artifacts to communicate and share my thinking
  • I am learning how to problem solve and work as part of a collaborative team

Let's Make!

There are plenty of artifacts we can create to share our own stories!

How might you design and create a drain to help send a message down to the little boy?

Set out a variety of different tools students could use to make a drain. Use a marble to act as a message.

Add constraints: How might students incorporate a right angle, an angle less and/or greater in their design?

Extension: How might you take a picture of your creation and label what is happening in Skitch?

How might you design and code a robot down a drain? (unplugged)

How might you create a drain from large loose parts or tape and code a rubber duck through with arrows?

Add constraints: How might students incorporate a right angle, an angle less and/or greater in their design?

Extension: How you use a stop motion app to make the duck move and arrows appear one by one?

Thanks to Angelo Mizzi for this inspiration!

How might you design and program a robot down a drain?

How might you create a drain from large loose parts and code a Dash robot or a Beebot through?

How might you design and draw a drain with markers and code an Ozobot through?

Add constraints: How might students incorporate a right angle, an angle less and/or greater in their design?

Extension: How might you take a picture of your creation and label what is happening in Skitch?

How might you create a message of positive change?

How might you use cut out magazine letters to create an uplifting message for your classroom?

Extension: How might you use a stop motion app so that you create a movie where the letters appear one by one?

How might you create a game in Scratch Jr that programs a duck down the drain?

How might your students modify this game in Scratch Jr?

Reflect and Connect

Think about it:

What skills and competencies are students developing while learning?

How might we document, share, reflect and connect with our learning communities in order to drive thinking forward?

Create, reflect upon and share learning via a documentation panel or audit trail

How might this panel provide you more insight to what is happening in the learning environment?

How might this panel spark dialogue and discussion about teaching and learning practices?

How might this panel empower learners (students and teachers)?

How might you caption the learning? How might the students?

What might you continue to wonder in order to drive learning forward?

Document and share learning with a learning story

Please feel free to copy and modify the template!

Forest of Reading learning journals and badges

What if students documented their learning with a learning journal created with Google Slides?

What if students got badges for the skills they used through Forest of Reading learning opportunities?

Forest of Reading Learning Journal

Here is a Google Slide Deck that could possibly be modified and copied for students to showcase their learning.

Please feel free make a copy and modify for your own students.

Additionally, please find all the templates and pngs for the badges in the Google Drive folder below.
