A Provocation to start this Professional Learning Journey:
All educators are constantly engaged in the process of observing students as they learn. We work together to document and record the evidence of student learning so that an effective educational program can be developed, implemented and monitored. It is important when educators collaborate that they share a common language about their professional practice so that communication is effective and all staff are clear about how they contribute to student learning.
This module is intended to provide an opportunity for teaching teams to have a shared understanding and a common language of how their observations of students contribute to the development of effective individualized programming.
The statements below emphasize the importance of gathering evidence of student learning through observation. With your teaching team, reflect on your belief about the value of observational assessment and discuss your current documentation practices.
"Information about [students'] learning is gathered from observations, notes, photos, ... , and interactions with [students]. That information, or evidence of learning, is analysed and interpreted by the educators in collaboration with the [students] and their ... family members to gain insights into the [students'] learning paths and processes. The insights gained are the basis for determining next steps in the [student's] learning."
The Kindergarten Program, 2016

The information you gather through observation will be invaluable, both to identify students in need and to plan to meet their needs. Your observations will also augment your written assessments when it is time to conduct them...”
