"Equity is a condition of fair, inclusive, and respectful treatment of all people. Equity does not mean treating people the same without regard for their individual differences. Equity acknowledges that we should not do the same thing for every student. Equity levels the playing field so that all children and youth have what they need to thrive at school. It advocates for the unique treatment of unique people. Equity is also about addressing and taking action to remove systemic barriers to achievement. It is about democracy in education. Students ... should be able to enter, achieve, and graduate from a system without sacrificing their identity and self-esteem. They should experience a system which respects and nurtures their uniqueness and in which their self-confidence, their hope, and their sense of meaning in life can thrive."

Ontario is home to one of the most diverse population in the world. Our schools embrace people with different identities and different backgrounds every day. This means that we may encounter behaviours that are unfamiliar to any one of us and this may be a source of discomfort. This discomfort may cause us to make judgements. This video discusses the impact of bias on our daily observations of others.
As this module is designed to support our skills in equitable assessment practices, it is important for us to reflect on our own personal bias that may impact our ability to use our observation skills to assess equitably.
