Our observations about student learning are focused on the achievement of learning goals. Below is the process for establishing goals and staff observations are an integral part of the assessment framework.
1. Establish learning goals.
2. Construct success criteria (by consulting with the student or observing the student).
3. Provide Feedback (this could include prompting, conversations, checklists, etc.)
4. Assess progress
5. Adjust instruction
6. Assess progress
Our observations can help:
provide feedback to the student
inform instruction adjustments
Below are some important concepts that need to be considered when using observations as evidence of student learning.
Please view this video with your education partner and reflect on how you can incorporate the 4 concepts:
developmentally focused
routine and on-going
at different times & in different contexts
objective
into your daily practice.
The Special Education staff at each school have been provided with an assessment kit that will help guide the observations of staff.
Each kit contained 3 book copies of:
The Carolina Curriculum For Infants and Toddlers with Special Needs
The Carolina Curriculum For Preschoolers with Special Needs
The Functional Independent Skills Handbook
These documents will help staff maintain a developmental lens when they are working with students who demonstrate that they require support in alternative areas and will help staff identify goals that will improve the student's quality of life.
It is important to remember that these tools will support a developmental focus; however, staff need to remember that assessment needs to be objective, on-going and collected at different times and contexts.
Using Brightspace to document student learning is an extremely valuable tool for both AFL and AOL. Many students are able to demonstrate their learning through their actions and communication with others. Brightspace offers students and educators the opportunity to develop a portfolio of student learning which will document a student's current level of achievement and help educators establish next steps.
