Evaluate the book for background knowledge and funds of knowledge:

• Look at social, cultural norms that happen in the book

• Evaluate for instructional opportunities within the text

Explain before, during and after:

• Focus on vocabulary; highlight sophisticated words (famished) and connect them to a word students do know (hungry)

• Use think-alouds to explain what you are doing as a proficient reader; how are you making meaning?

Engage & Extend

• Engage in cross-curricular activities

• Engage in literacy-rich activities; reading, writing, thinking, speaking, listening - being purposeful about the connection to literacy
