This courses presents grammar and composition skills for upper-level ESOL students using the social justice themes of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The course addresses specifically definition, cause-and-effect, and discussion essays using a paragraph-to-essay writing process.
The course incorporates a variety of instructional materials, such as guided reading via interactive digital elements and printable graphic organizers, videos, self-correcting H5P practice exercises, and short quizzes. After some preliminary activities, each two-week unit follows a regular routine:
grammar lesson - major grammar point plus a "quick fix" for stubborn errors
paragraph writing - topical prompts to spur thinking and application
editing practice - self-correcting error correction exercises drawn from authentic student writing
composition lesson - essay organization focusing on either definition, cause-and-effect, or discussion essay strategies
composition lesson - zoom-in on specific part of an essay: introduction, body, conclusion
assignment - essay prompt for either definition, cause-and-effect, or discussion essay drawing on student-selected topics within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The appendix includes:
grading rubrics
student self-checks
individual writing conference preparation
sample student essays
practice final exam
instructor resources, including scope and sequence, warm-up writing prompts, etc.
