The Future of Library Technology

Technology plans

In today’s world, technology is everywhere. It’s in our homes, workplaces, schools, cars, stores and even in our pockets. Technology is a part of our every minute at this point. At the same time, however, technology is in an ever-changing state. It is not possible to say you have the most updated technology because something newer is right on the heels of current devices.

Libraries have become more than just a place to check out books. In the past few decades, they have become places where patrons can come to experience current and many times new technology. They are a place where folks can use computers, printers, scanners, e-readers, etc.

In the future, it will be more and more important for libraries to keep up with current technology as we transition between different ways of obtaining and transferring information.

For these reasons, it is especially important for libraries to plan for technology needs and changes. It is important for libraries to not only keep up with current trends, but it is imperative that they keep current equipment running well and updated so that patrons can continue to rely on the services they already provide.

It is difficult to decide what step in a technology plan would be the most important since they work hand in hand to make the overall picture of technology in a library, but I think that the step of “conducting a needs assessment” would likely be the most crucial. This is the step after you’ve assessed what you already have and you’ll need to figure out what the future will be. You’ll need to look at the age of current equipment and when it will likely need replacement so you can keep current technologies in place. You’ll also need to keep up on trends, new technology and predict where the needs/wants of library patrons will be so that you can continue to provide excellent service and keep pace with what people will need and want. Staff members as well as patrons can help with deciding what new technologies might be good for the library to have and use. Keeping a close eye on conferences, news articles and seminars will help library staff to know what to look for. (Burke, 2013, p. 202)

Predicting the future will be a big part of the decision-making process and successfully doing so will help libraries stay relevant in our future. Helping the public have access to current and upcoming technologies is important in this ever-changing world. Libraries are places for exploration, education, and community gathering for common interests and causes.
