Databases

Library databases are definitely different from Google or other web search engines. The biggest difference is that library databases, whether linked to other branches or databases are only as large as the items they have within their collection. They are basically a way to search and find where a resource to answer a question might be found. Web databases however, are broad knowledge bases that are constantly under construction, molded by countless contributors, both educated and not. Library databases are confined to terms and search language based on the Library of Congress Search Headings. The web has no limits and search terms are added by individuals and can be driven by popularity or current trends.

I would search a library database if I want solid information that is backed by research and written by trusted authority. For instance, if I want to search for proven dog whelping best practices, a library database search will lead me to publications that are written by experts in the field. A web search would come up with plenty of results, but I may not know if the information is trustworthy or researched.

I would trust a Google search over a library database search in the case of the need to find very current information about something that is noteworthy in the news today. For instance, I own a Samsung Note7 cell phone. When I heard that they were being recalled for the second and final time, I needed current information about what was going on. A Google search took me to a news site that told me the latest news and information I needed as well as gave me information directly from Samsung. Also, I can depend on a Google search for current political information on the Presidential race. I do need to be careful about the sources I select however, so that I get credible information and not opinion.

If I were looking for information on a topic that needs both historical and current information, I might use both sources. For instance, if I were looking for historical information about a sports team and wanted accurate information from a reliable source, I could look in the library database for a published book about that team. For current records and roster information, a Google search would be more productive for that purpose.
