While Kawah Ijen is seen as an active volcano, there have been no major eruptions recently.
July 10–16, 2024:
Seismic activity increased significantly, which led PVMBG (Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi) to raise the alert level from 1 to 2. Tremor amplitudes rose, and white gas emissions were seen up to 200 meters high. Sulfur smells were observed in the lake (Global Volcanism Program, 2024).
August 7–13, 2024:
Activity decreased, and seismicity returned to near-normal. The lake remained turquoise with mild sulfur odors. The alert level was lowered back to 1 (Global Volcanism Program, 2024).
