During class time, you may not use your cell phone except for the reasons below.
This is because we need your focus. Scientific studies show that even having your phone out on the desk can make your mind wander. Since you are only in class a few hours a week, we need your mind to be present during that time. After class and on breaks, you are welcome to use your phone.
There are a few exceptions: 1. If you are a primary caregiver and need to be contactable by a daycare or babysitter, you can have your phone out/on vibrate. We simply ask that you don't check it often during class. 2. If you have a medical emergency in your family or other crisis, you can step out of class and take an important phone call. When you're done, put the phone away and come on back inside, or let us know if you need to leave. 3. You need to use a translator for English to look up vocabulary words.
You may use a personal computer during class for taking notes or working on assignments. If you have approved PCC accommodations, you may take notes on another electronic device. However, your instructor may ask you to put away your device during discussions, group work, etc. It is not acceptable to work on personal stuff or homework for other classes during class time.
