This class will use contract grading. Contract grading emphasizes and recognizes your effort—the labor you put into assignments. The goal is for you to have control over your time and effort, so that you can effectively manage your time to achieve the grade you want in the class. The other goal is to make the writing process, metacognition and reflection, and a growth mindset more important than the final numbers at the end of the term.
For each major assignment, you will submit a reflection. This helps you to assess your own labor on each assignment, and helps us see the work you’ve put into it.
For each assignment, you will receive:
Lots of feedback, usually written, sometimes via voice memo, email, or D2L comments
A grade of PASS (P) or Revise and Resubmit (RR)
If you receive a grade of RR, we will let you know specifically what you can do to revise it to make it a PASS
At that point, you can choose whether you want to revise and resubmit the assignment to get a PASS grade.
Here are some of the assignments we will have in the class:
Every week, we will read several chapter of the book and/or an essay. You are expected to keep up with the readings on your own. Audiobooks are great!
You will contribute to a weekly discussion on our readings in class.
You will reflect on your reading, think about your habits and processes as a reader, and make predictions about what's next in your weekly log.
You will learn vocabulary and take short quizzes on what you learn. You can take a quiz 3 times; only the highest score counts.
We will come up with a fun project to share our musical tastes and practice with paragraph writing styles.
You will learn to tell a story about yourself to a particular audience.
You will create a question based on our book, then research it with academic sources at the PCC library. Your final will be a presentation to the group of what you learned and how you answer our research question.
