Reading 7: Students go beyond the textbook
This fall, the ESOL Reading 7 students at Sylvania Campus went on a special trip to the North View Gallery for a great learning experience. They saw an art show called Full Circle: The Harmonic Sum of Current and Light. The artist, Shana Palmer, made a special space using sculptures, sound, and light that you could walk through and experience.
This visit was connected to what the students were studying in class—a text about how sound travels. The art show gave them a chance to see and feel how sound and light work in a real-world way.
To make the trip even more relevant, the ESOL instructor, Luciana Diniz, shared some new words the student had learned in class with the gallery's director, Christine Weber. Director Weber then made sure to use those words during the tour of the gallery. This helped the students use their new vocabulary right away while looking at the art. The highlight of the visit was when student - and singer - Maria Gonzalez shared her beautiful voice with the class and interacted with the art (see video). It was an unforgettable experience for everyone.

This Fall, Brent Spenger, an Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium Student Ambassador, was a guest speaker in the ESOL Reading 7 class at the Sylvania Campus. After students read a text about how sound travels, Brent demonstrated how sound needs air to travel. He rang a bell in a vacuum chamber before the air was pulled out to show everyone it rang, and after the air was pulled out- it didn't. Brent Spenger's visit provided the ESOL Reading 7 students with a memorable, hands-on experience that reinforced their understanding of physics concepts discussed in their reading material.
