New: What to do in a tough job market
Special note about CPA licensing in Oregon:
Although CPA licensing and exam requirements are directed by each state, exam results, experience and licenses can be transferred within states. For example, I passed the CPA exam while I lived in California. I earned my experience primarily working in Washington, but ultimately both were transferred to Oregon where I was licensed.
Right now we have a significant difference in education requirements for the CPA exam between Washington and Oregon which I have outlined in this chart. The difference is that in Oregon all the 36 quarter credit hours in accounting coursework must come from upper division college credit (300 level and above) and Washington is allowing students to use both lower and upper division credits with no distinction between the two.
Obviously, a student will want to take the coursework that prepares them to be successful on the exam and in their career, but Washington will allow more flexibility in getting the right combination of credits with the most affordable cost. The Oregon Board of Accountancy is currently considering whether a change should be made to the Oregon requirements, so closely watch the news about this over the next year.
