It's What

We DO!

Students don't just read and write and practice grammar. They create! Students make things in relation to what has been read or what is being written about. We connect and apply communication skills.

Going Small with Big!

In the 2017-18 school year, students read a Scholastic Scope magazine article about Syrian refugees. After viewing photos and videos of refugee camps, students were required to build mini shelters out of random odds and ends from a paper bag. Students considered durability, stability, and size. Each shelter had to house three to four Lego figures. Students then wrote a narrative about Lego refugees. Once the narrative text was completed, students photographed their plot sequence of their narratives. They used green screen photo editing to produce landscapes.

Going Big with Less!

While bigger classes worked with smaller models, our smallest class worked outdoors to build a shelter suitable for actual refugees. Students were able to find supplies on campus. Their narrative consisted of real life possibilities of a refugee's life during a civil war.

Before students got the go ahead to use the wafer board we had found, we used cardboard, logs, tape, and trash bags for a shelter.

Making Photos Work with Reading

When making a book report, objective summary, or plot sequence slideshow, students go all out with their thoughts to create mood, theme, and tone.

Students Use

ALL Resources

Often, students include building staff members in their retelling of stories. Here, Officer Courtney, our Resource Officer is pretending to arrest a major book character.

Students called upon the school nurse to show the medical attention a book character had to receive due to a head injury.

Advanced students made diaromas and put on puppet shows. That was fun(ny).
