On the 8th and 10th of August, Members of MechaTech went around local stores to search for materials needed for the project. The prices of these materials were gotten and recorded in order to prepare a realistic budget. The aim of this was to get cheaper prices of these materials in order to ensure that the cost of the project does not go beyond the allocated budget.
During the design of the Hydraulic bench, the team deliberated on what material would be best suited for the support of the hydraulic bench, the choices were finally narrowed down to be between steel and Aluminium.
Once Baltimore and Chinazor arrived at the market, the material experts recommended stainless steel having seen the design. This was because of its durability and weldability.
The team agreed on the use of stainless steel, and the price of steel bars and sheets were gotten and recorded.
On the 10th of August, Baltimore and Chinazor sourced for PVC pipes for the piping system of the Hydraulic bench. Their prices were gotten and recorded.
On the 16th of August, during a meeting with the research manager Otibhor, Team members saw the need to search markets on the mainland of Lagos state for more items that were not seen at Eleko market. The members then contributed for the research and Baltimore Ojobo volunteered to carry it out. He left on the 16th of August and came back on the 17th. He was able to find Rollers, plumbing materials with better prices, Flowmeters and many more necessary components.
Materials needed for the Hydraulic Bench were chosen using the knowledge of strength of materials
The stainless steel was chosen as the support due to its high resistance to corossion and its ability to withstand much load
Aluminium composite would be used as the sink due to its ability to be bent and carved after which they intend to seal the joints with a gum to avoid leakages
Castor wheels would be used for the wheel since they are able to withstand much weight
Later during the SIWES program, we were informed of a change in the project funding. This change meant that the budget needed to be adjusted. The amount that was now allocated to the project was a sum of ninety thousand, five hundred naira which was less than half of the initial two hundred and fifty thousand that was allocated.
Thanks to the maintenance unit team, we were able to get some other items that the budget could not take care of. Group members and lecturers also contributed a lot to sourcing other materials like thinner, adaptors, paint, and so on.
