Color Theory

What is Color?

The world is an amazing place, and when things are put simply it can help us understand the mysteries it holds.

If you're wondering what color actually is, watch this video.

Using Colors in Theory

This video will help you understand how to use the color wheel properly. An important note of information in here is the bit about creating highlight colors. The narrator explains you cannot just add white to achieve a highlight, you must also us the "next color up" on the wheel.

Remember making those oil pastel color blends?

Warm vs. Cool

This is a quick explanation of what warm and cool colors are. This video will show you the benefits of using warm or cool color schemes which can help your art evoke an emotion in the viewer.

Also, as a side note, when you mix complementary colors you are inherently mixing warm and cool colors together.

Munsell Color System

The most comprehensive scale of color is the Munsell Color System. Pictured to the left you can see the three main properties of color:

  • Hue - The color in reference.

  • Value - How light or dark the color is.

  • Chroma - How pure of a color we see.

This is like a super color wheel that shows you every property of color at the same time. In reality color cannot simply be broken down into the regular color wheel, there are great variations depending upon time of day, location, and the weather. For instance, a yellow flower may be bright and vibrant on a sunny day (it is reflecting a higher intensity of light) yet on a foggy day that same flower may seem somewhat dull (it is reflecting a lower intensity of light). The Munsell Color System is a map to seeing the differences in these colors.
