Which characteristics of civilizations do you think are the most important in sustaining a civilization? Explain why.
A civilization is a complex society characterized by urban development, organized social classes, and developed communication systems.
Can you guess any of the five characteristics that make up a civilization?
Advanced Cities
Civilizations must have large urban cities that are centers for trade in large areas.
A civilization's population would be concentrated in one or more large cities.
Cities controlled the surrounding land, but the safest place was within the city's walls.
Advanced Technology
Civilizations had technologies that made their lives easier.
Any tool or invention that was made to make a job easier or allow someone to do something new qualifies as advanced technology. This includes weapons, vehicles, tools, machines, etc.
Ex: Sailboat and the Chariot
Record Keeping
Civilizations must have a system of writing in order to keep records of taxes, laws, or trade.
Writing systems can be made using pictures, symbols, or letters representing individual sounds or whole words or ideas.
Civilizations must have specialized workers doing different jobs.
Social classes develop based on the importance placed on the work done by the different groups of people.
Ex: Farmers, Artisans, Priests, Rulers, etc...
Complex Institutions (Organizations)
Civilizations need to have complex institutions that provide organization and order to the people’s lives.
The two primary forms or this would be government and religion. Civilizations must have at least one of these two to be organized enough to survive.
